How tune values in parametrs SSS for create real skin shader?

There is also a preset in the program to help. Depends on the shader tho so it will vary.

No need to think outside the box....
    Just make it invisible.

The preset is great if you're doing renders of embryos. But for adult humans that have more mass to them, turn the intensity down to around 25-30% for starters. And for GI renders, use just a 10% white background as light for the scene (or a 90% black background as light) so you don't blow out your human with radiation. SSS makes them very sensitive to outdoor light.

I forgot to tell you that those settings are for a 5'8" - 6' tall figure. They may not work for just the head of a figure.

it's more or less a trial and error. and I change my sss between characters from time to time depending on the look I am going for.

Just remember that the SSS settings are global for a scene. They are not local for an object's shader channel. So when you change the size of an object, you have to re-adjust the SSS settings for it. The bigger the object, the more you'll want to increase the SSS refraction index setting. Reduce it for smaller objects.

I didn't know it either, until I read up on SSS theory and application and saw that they were doing stuff globally. I found a couple sites that used Max 8 that had a radius setting for their SSS. I don't think Carrara has that in their SSS.

So how come you can select an ear(shader domain) sss setting differently than a head? What's the point?

I guess you would need to as a work-around to make up for not having a SSS radius setting in Carrara. I wonder if Poser 6 has more (or less) SSS settings than Carrara? I'm curious if Carrara can do a SSS ear as well as the PDF tutorial shows?
