Is 60/40 what you guys typically start at for sunny GI scenes?

I'll often knock the ambient right back, 30 or less, so that most of the illumination is coming from the sunlight.

I generally leave it as it is in the material editor, but change values in the atmosphere tab, where I push the sliders to 60% sunlight, takes care of unwanted graininess, and gives more contrast.

Ditto - it's easier to change settings globally in the atmosphere setting. Changing ambient settings in the material editor is needed for special effects - for instance, using a fake landscape in an alpha plane requires the lighting to be all ambient and not diffuse, since you don't want lights falling on the alpha plane as if it were an object.
