Subject: Rough Carrara ???

Hi there, I was thinking of buying the new version of Carrara but I was looking for an answer to a question first. Could someone tell me why the opening on the left is so rough (even when rendered)? This opening was made by deleting polygons then adding polygons around the inside thickness in the vertex modeller. The opening on the right was done using a Boolean operation and is much cleaner. Surely this cleaner look can be achieved by deleting polygons too - can it not? Cheers

You should select everything and then crease edges in the VM. It should be all clean then.

Thanks, that's done the trick.

Also, if you look at it, the left opening has a "return," i.e., there are polys on the inside of the hole. The right opening is two holes lined up on each other. If you were to loft that space closed than the right opening would also take on that distorted look. The distortion is because Carrara is applying a certain amount of smoothing to the hard corner. Creasing is one way to solve this. Two others are detaching faces, and adding a bevel at the edge.
