I've been sorting through my attic recently and came accross some stuff that brought back memories.

Apart from the obvious stuff you'd expect to find in a Brycers attic (Like a Bryce2 CD) - I stumbled upon something that REALLY brought a smile to my face.

I found an old favourite of mine called "3D Construction Kit" which, I have to say, I was TOTALLY obsessed with in the good'ol'days of the Amiga.  And I was just wondering...what has this sort of thing evolved into now - what is todays PC equivalent?

For those that don't know, you could create interactive 3D game environments, in fact, fully functioning executables as 3D games.  I've heard of stuff like DarkBasic and all that kinda stuff, but it doesn't compare to how easy this thing was to use.

Is there any PC equivalent on todays market - I'd really like to know 'cos it was a BIG-TIME great program.

Maybe FPS Creator? 800 ready-made 3D models. Modify them, or import your own. "Our fully graphical Windows based editor allows you to literally paint your maps with pixel perfect 3D precision..." Looks really nice.

there's something like that out there called 'Doga'..it's robot  and spaceship parts,  and it's just the thing to quiet down young men (8-12) when your co-workers leave you with 'baby-sitting' duty. There's a free version., and 2 spendies..you get to assemble, rotate, and export (as .dxf, but whaddayawant for free?..;)

Cheers Erlik - it looks superb.

To be fair, I didn't hold out much hope of there being anything else like it - luckily I was wrong  :woot:

I notice from their website they're also the maker of DarkBasic, so it's a shame I didn't check-out their site sooner after seeing DB in a computer store.

Just downloaded the demo, off to play.

Hmmmm, that does look like fun Erlik, and I'm really not much of a 'gamer". I think I'd rather build one than play it, if that makes any sense.

Ah yes, 3d-construction kit, there was even a Sinclair-Spectrum version of that program.

First there was cube, and now there is Sauerbraten. Most likely the only two FPS-games with a realtime level-editor built in.

And it is open source too.

Its actually dead easy to add your own textures, and the editor itself seems a bit odd at first since you only have one thing, TEH CUBE to play with. But take it from me, it is easy.

The status of this software at this moment is still pre-alpha, but if this is alpha?

http://www.cubeengine.com and http://www.sauerbraten.org seems to have some problems at the moment, but i guess that they will be online again at some later time.

(there are some artifacts in the screenshot, but these do not show in the game itself, resized too :) )

I've downloaded the demo, and from initial impressions - excellent!  I'm glad I asked about this.

I'm not really a gamer myself - but the lure of being able to walk-about environments that 'you' have created has always grabbed my attention.  I'll be buying a copy on my next trip into town, that's for sure (At £30 it's a must-have).

It's gonna be good to make different use of some Bryce renders for walls etc - and the way the lighting works, means I'd be able to create some 'baked' environments in Bryce using TA, then import them to walk around in real-time.

Looks really good - grab the demo - can't hurt, and I reckon you'll be glad you did.

Robert, yup, there were a few versions I think (Amiga, Atari, C64, Spectrum).  I use to own the Amiga AND C64 versions, but the C64 version wasn't much good on such a low-spec machine.

Thanks for the links, I'll be sure to check those out after I've played with this one a little more.  I only hope it's not heavily code-driven as opposed to an interface.
