Subject: Xfrog Sampler for Bryce...can it be used for Vue?

vulcanccit ( ) posted Mon, 24 April 2006 at 9:37 PM · edited Wed, 30 October 2024 at 4:29 PM

I ordered the Xfrog USA West and its on the way.  However I found 3 Xfrog Sampler packs on sale over at Daz3d, but realized after I bought them, that they are for bryce.  I do own bryce so that is cool but I really wanted them for Vue.  Can they be converted or exported by chance?

I have used the free stuff from X-Frog in Vue without any problems.

I don't know much about Bryce, but if the meshes are in the obp format, they can't be used in Vue. Can you export in another 3d file format from Bryce? If so, you could export in 3ds or obj from Bryce and import back into Vue. Or maybe DAZ Studio (freeware) can import Bryce files, and then, from Daz Studio, you could export in a 3d file format Vue can read.

I keep all my 3DS, LWO and Vob files in a seperate folder not related to Vue, Bryce or any other program. I keep this folder in "My documents". When I want to use them, I import these meshes into the program I want to use them in. In this case, Bryce and Vue.

Here is the Xfrog public site where I get them at. Besure to choose 3DS format.

These are in OBP and I have not yet found a way to export.  Shawn from Greenworks replied to an email and suggested I just buy the DVD.

Maybe you could see at DAZ if their DAZ Studio imports Bryce format, if so, download it, it's free, load your obp meshes in it, and export in obj for use in Vue.

You can export .obp's from Bryce by going to export under the file menu. These models where originally .3DS or some other, so they can be re-exported. You can't export native Bryce trees because the aren't .obp formated.

Vulcanccit-

Basically remember this- BRYCE is NOT a modeling program- it has no more real modeling tools than what Vue has. OBP is a Bryce file format- like VOB is is Vue file format. They are for storage purposes only. Nearly all nice models made for Bryce, or Vue, are made in a Third-Party 3D Modelling programs. So they are ALL exportable (except NATIVE BOOLEAN made objects.)

Here's a link I have been posting in the Vue Forum since the very first days this forum was created here... heh-

http://www.wolfiesden.com/bryce/tut/old/med-export.html

Wolfie's website hasn't changed here since MetaCreations owned Bryce- and they released their final Bryce 4.1 version- and then the company blew-up... Bryce going to Corel- and finally- to DAZ.

But even with Bryce 5 and Bryce 5.5- the same "secret Easter Egg" tool has remained since the final Bryce 4.1 release-- so in other words- YES you can export stuff from Bryce. I have been doing it for many years- I have previously purchased the Bryce X-Frog stuff to use in Vue- as well as Phillip Drawbridges Bryce models DAZ has had on sale- and the now very current Bryce Terrain Freebie that DAZ is giving away- ALL can be used in Vue by exporting them- WITH texture maps-in 3DS, OBJ, COB formats. I sometimes export in multiple formats because some come out of Bryce better than another format- it all depends on what the ORIGINAL modeling program was that created the model- that was imported into Bryce in the first place!   (Bryce terrains export out as DEMS and other formats usable in Vue.)

So EXPORT AWAY- there are TONS of nice Bryce models that I now have in Vue... like for instance- MESKI's Country Church and BeyondVR's Bowie Knife available NOW over at 3DCC'sFreestuff.

Check out these great models by Zoltar- he releases them in Bryce only OBP-But- ... I have ALL of them in VUE and they render just great! Zoltar uses AMAPI- so exporting them in 3DS is fine- but sometimes OBJ will work better. I usually try both. COB also works really well in Vue and sometimes can be the BEST export file format to use in Vue...

so you have to render the object from top down, choose the 360 panoramic option, save it as an image...crop it, then bring that in as a terrain using the picture import.  Is this correct?  then export as you see fit?

...I'm not sure what part of Wolfie's tutorial you are referring to...

For exporting meshes it's fairly simple and straight forward-

"Select your rock or mesh and click the chicklet to bring up the edit mesh dialog. Leave everything here alone (unless you want to alter it before exporting). Press CTL-D (this is an easter egg). If you don't have the Edit Mesh dialog up, CTL-D will duplicate the rock or mesh, inside that dialog, it brings up a SaveAs window. Choose your file format and click save."

Your save choices are: OBJ, 3DS, COB, etc...

To get the texture maps of the Mesh do this-

"simply open the Material Editor (ME) and then open the Photo Library by clicking on the pink button ( ) above the channel that contains the image. Click the button below the image. Open your favorite image editor (PhotoShop or Paint Shop Pro for example) and Paste the image in from the clipboard. You will need to do this for the alpha channel as well."

...so once you have saved the various texture maps- you will have to manually re-apply them in Vue, of course. I place these in the same directory as the exported mesh and when I am finished re-mapping it in Vue- I save it as a VOB- and Voila!- your Bryce mesh is now in Vue and will (or should) look almost idential to how it looked in Bryce..

Thank you all! I got this to work.  Veritas777's info was very helpful.  I had missed th Ctrl D in that tuturoial somehow.  It does take a bit to save all the textures from the tree bark, leaves, etc, and then recombine, but it does work and looks pretty good in vue  So for the $3 per sampler pack, its a cheap price to pay to get the nice trees :)

Yes- that's why I bought it too- to use in Vue. A really good deal for Vue users if you have Bryce 5.

I have also purchased other Bryce models at DAZ to use in Vue. Phil Drawbridge makes a lot of models for Bryce- they have been sold really cheap at DAZ- and all of them can be imported into Vue.

Also- if you go to the Bryce Free Stuff at DAZ you can get even more nice free Bryce models to import into Vue...
