The new Freestuff area is up and running.  It will function basically the same as before with a few adjustments such as deeper catergory sections, a new "Recent Top 50" list, and some minor changes to the upload page.

Please go check out the new Freestuff area!!!

Thank you for your continued patience during this conversion process.

Khai ( ) posted Wed, 09 August 2006 at 3:31 PM

when will the catagories go live? (eg atm poser lists everything poser, not by figure, texture, pose etc)

StaceyG ( ) posted Wed, 09 August 2006 at 3:33 PM · edited Wed, 09 August 2006 at 3:34 PM

We will be going through and adjusting categories on previously uploaded freebies during the next few weeks manually so it will take some time for the current freestuff items to be categorized correctly.

Can we get something set up so that there are always thumbnails for freestuff?

I mean, I'm rather reluctant to download something, even free if it's not something I'd be interested in, it's a waste of time (and time=money😉) to do that, load it up, and then delete everything if you don't want it.

Is it possible to put in the commercial/non-commercial tag again?  I don't want to download something and find out after the fact that it isn't usable commercially.

andytw ( ) posted Thu, 10 August 2006 at 5:54 AM

It says that freestuff will be archived after 45 days, but there does not appear to be any archives for Jan-June 2006, only for 1998-2005?

Mahray ( ) posted Thu, 10 August 2006 at 6:47 AM

Modus - sometimes the lack of thumbnails is due to servers changing and people forgetting to update them (insert guilty look here) or bandwidth allocations being exceeded.

No, I know about, and understand the undisplayable image thing, what I'm talking about are freebies that aren't uploaded with a thumbnail period.

Like the one in the attached image.

A couple of things that need looking into :-

Search results don't have any paging, so it's not possible to see beyond the first 12 items.
Thumbnails are being suppressed due to nudity, but there's no setting(s) to turn this off.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Thu, 10 August 2006 at 11:42 AM

Er.. I found a checkbox for the nudity thing. In your Settings in Free Stuff.

And the search doesn't work, period. I get an SQL syntax error if I try to search beyond the 45 days (WHY make that limit at all?!)

Took me quite a while to find a way where I could actually link to my free stuff.

I like the fact that you can sort your own free stuff after most downloaded, it's a nice feature, but at the same time rather useless, compared to how nice it would have been with ratings/comments (personally I prefer comments to ratings)

Phew and I don't envy you guys for having to go through the whole load and fix categories. Is there any way we can do that outselves? And sorta help out and get our own stuff categorized correctly at the same time?

I'd expected the settings link to be at the top level, not via the "my freestuff" link.

And pagination has appeared on the search result pages, so that's those two things sorted.

StaceyG ( ) posted Thu, 10 August 2006 at 11:59 AM

nruddock,  You don’t see any paging because there are only 12 results. If you perform a search that brings back, say, 100 results, you will see paging.

ernyoka1,

I performed a search “beyond the 45 days ” and didn’t get any SQL errors. Could you please copy and paste the SQL error you are getting?

Here's the SQL error I get, I tried to search for stuff by ernyoka1 (me...) older than 1 day and newer than 365 days, in other words stuff I'd posted within the last year. Or at least that's what I expected to appear.. but all I get is:

I'm not sure about the archiving. What happens if you know ther is something in the free section but you don't know what month it was uploaded. Does that mean you have to search through every month or am I missing something?

I must say that free stuff navigation is becomed painful expirience after these changes. I mean, navigation is unnececary complicated. Here is my proposal how should look  navigation:

Default nav look when user open free stuff page, just a small change:

Default nav look

After user selects for instance Poser area

Poser area

And when user selects Aiko3 subarea:

Aiko3 Subarea

I think this is more efficient navigation than it's now.

And that horrible archiving thing. I mean, what's that all about? Archiving is done ever 45 days and I can select a month and year of archive? From when a month has 45 days? And if I haven't seen when some product is published I should use search option someone said. And what if I can remember what's the name of that product or who has created that product? For instance, I know that there whas one product under Rhino area but I cant remember the nam or time nor publisher of that product. And now I have to browse manually every and single month from January 1999 to July 2006?

Come on guys and girls, bee serious...

I managed to do a search from 2 months old to less than 5 years old and I searched on aiko. It brought me up three pages of results - which doesn't seem very much for such a popular character so I guess it all depends on how efficient people are at putting in key words. Its seems a very tedious way of doing things though :(  if the only other way is to look at a complete month by going to the archives. The other thing I noticed is that it wouldn't let you select things at the right hand side and not put a search word in at the left hand side. By the way category is spelt incorrectly at the right hand side as well.

I'd like to know what the TOU's are??? I see almost NO INFO, on the commercial noncommercial use of 99% of the items. It seems that should be a priorty statement or a given that if it is free...it can be used in any context, short of reselling it or copying it over and distributing the files. Sounds fair to me...don't use 'em if they are restricted. Don't post My freebies and restrict them either. Just a thought.

I gotta say, I agree with most others around here when I say the redesign of the freebies section has made things seriously worse. It leads me to believe that there was absolutely no user acceptance testing of the new design, and what we have now is what happens when programmers are left to their own devices to design a user interface. In fact, it's not just the freebies area. Something seriously has happened over the last several months to Renderosity. The whole site, from navigation to searching to browsing has become increasinly more complicated. All I can say is thank God 'osity is part of Content Paradise. (And I'm not too thrilled with CP's redesign for Siggraph either but for different reasons).

no browse by catagory : you have to search, but unless you know what you are looking for to enter into the search engine...
search engine still buggy and brings up non relevant responses
no abilty to focus on what is relevant : Eg I don't have Max, Lightwave, Mojo - the abilty to filter these responses out would be a major step forwards.
Nudity Filter on be default : To hard to link that to the overall filter setting in our profiles??
white background : We can change the forums and the gallery...

Seconded. > Quote - search engine still buggy and brings up non relevant responses

Seconded. Perhaps freebie authors should be permitted to include "keywords" which can be searched on as wel? I know that didn't exist before but it seemed like before the search engine included the text from the notes/ details text before when coming up with its results. it doesn't appear to be doing that today. > Quote - no abilty to focus on what is relevant : Eg I don't have Max, Lightwave, Mojo - the abilty to filter these responses out would be a major step forwards.

Agreed. > Quote - Nudity Filter on be default : To hard to link that to the overall filter setting in our profiles??

Double, triple, and quadrupled agreed. In fact, the nudity feature is what brought me to the forums in the first place today because I kept on seeing "image filtered because of nudity" or somehting to that effect and I was like I would have never turned that on and couldn't figure out how to turn it off. Having that option be under "My Freestuff" is totally the wrong place to have it. My Freestuff to me is for freestuff that I've uploaded. This option should be one the member's profile or account settings page (perhaps tied into a global "Show nudity?" bit flag).

We are recategorising the items now. So far we're about 2000 items in.

"search engine still buggy and brings up non relevant responses"
Can you give an example?

"no abilty to focus on what is relevant : Eg I don't have Max, Lightwave, Mojo - the abilty to filter these responses out would be a major step forwards."
Just select the relevant category drop-down on the right of the search screen to bring up (for example) only items in Poser.

"Nudity Filter on be default : To hard to link that to the overall filter setting in our profiles??"
I will suggest this to the programming team. It's possible that the filters will all be able to be set from homepage once the full conversion is complete.

"white background : We can change the forums and the gallery..."
Sorry, no answer on that one...

"It seems more cluttered, less organized."
Well, the whole freestuff regategorisation is designed purely to organise items into relevant categories. After all, how organised is it to have to search "Posable clothing", "Conforming figures" and "Millie/vicky" when you're looking for V3 clothing?

Yes :-) You will also be able to specify further down, e.g. clothing for V3 or poses for her, or just view the whole category. We are going through now and dropping everything into appropriate categories, since the Freestuff didn't acknowledge the existence of any new characters since Victoria 1 ;-) You can already view everything in Poser-Ready Props because this category has been retained from the old system.

Hi Ariana,

Sorry I missed your question before. Freestuffs are offered by the creators and not hosted on Renderosity, so the TOU for each item needs to be checked by you individually. The creator may have ticked "non-commercial use only" which you can see in the Details box, or they may have put terms in the readme, or they may not specify. If in doubt, contact the creator for details. (By the way - many creators say "non-commercial use" but if approached individually, some will happily grant permission to use in commercial renders, depending on the nature of the work.)

Karen :-)

Hi Ariana,

We can't display the TOU for every item, since all creators state it differently.
With over 14,000 items in Freestuff... we could not create a statement which would cover all items, except for "Check license terms individually." It's up to individual creators to set their own terms.
