I need to be able to put text on a UV map - as in this image (but printed, not hamfisted writing) is there a simple way to do this?

Best way is to use the Warp Text button, should be on the Text tool bar. Click anywhere on your image, select the 'create warped text button' choose the style you want and type away :)

Thanks mucho, I now have bendy text.  I like the way you can change the angle of the bend even after typing the text.

Only thing I haven't managed is the text upside down part.

You could always try rotating your Canvas, typing your text then flipping it back again...not sure what that will do to the look of your text, but it's worth a try :)

...or duplicate the text layer then go to Edit>Transform>Flip Vertical

In CS versions you can attach text to a path :)

Aha, thanks that sounds handy.

You could also Transform>Rotate it 180 as well

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
