Subject: How to produce a Crisp and Colorful thumbnail for Gallery posting that meets its

AshleyW ( ) posted Sun, 10 September 2006 at 11:17 AM · edited Sun, 03 November 2024 at 11:50 PM

Hello folks,

Renderosity Gallery posting requires the thumbnail to be no larger than 200X200 in size, and smaller than 15KB in file.

I've seen many max-sized thumbnail of other artists that look very crisp and colorful, however, I cannot find a way to produce a 200X200 thumbnail that is smaller than 15KB and still looks decent enough.   Saving as a jpg file, I have to compress it to minimum resolution and it just looks smeared and ugly.

I have used Photoshop for a couple of years now, but I've been learning by myself.    I think there should be a way to accomplish the said task in PS.    If any nice folk here could enlighten me, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks in advance!    (My version is PS CS)

If you would like to give your viewers a little treat, you can do a crop of the image.

Are you using the "save for web function"?

Also, a lot of Rendies will do a quick sharpen before they save as jpeg;)

Hello Ashley,

I can see that you are using Adobe Photoshop CS tho.. Good, now i agree with Sans2012..

This is what you have to do:

When ever your thumb is ready with the sizes you want.. You have to save it for web! It is a little further down from the Save As option!!

From the popping menu make sure to choose .JPEG and set the quality to 50 or less a bit.. You can see the sizes at the low left corner of that saving menu..

But remember one thing plesae.. Before saving for web, goto the filters menu and then sharp your image once!

You all done tho..

Thank you and if you need more support please ask for it

This is what I do, and I think I get good outcomes.  I am self-taught as well.

I save my original as a .psd file, then I ...

Go to "Save for Web" and select:

Optimize tab

JPEG
Maximum
ICC Profile
Image size tab, adjust size to 200 or 199 on the largest of width or length, with constrained proportions checked
Quality:  Bicubic

(I use "Uncompensated Color" in drop down box when I click little arrow top right side of image window)

Now, check the size of the file.  If it is over 15K, move the quality slider down until you get to 15K or less.
Save as thumb.

I also save my gallery image in the same manner, adjusting it to the Image Size I want and adjusting quality slider if necessary.  I usually don't have to adjust it very much, if at all.

Whether this works for you I can't say.  Sometimes there is a difference in the profiles one sets up, and of course images.  I had trouble with colors and ended up with this configuration.  It solved my problem.  You can take what will help you and forget the rest.

Good Luck!
