Subject: Backgroundproblems in P7

yvonne. ( ) posted Sun, 07 January 2007 at 4:46 AM · edited Thu, 25 July 2024 at 5:47 PM

Hi,

When I use a backgroundpicture it isn´t visible when I render with the P4 engine??? It´s there when I render with firefly. I have opend the same sceen in P6 and there it works.

Can someone else check this or is it just me?

I just tried it and got same result... the background image does not show in P4 render mode... even with... Render Over: Background Picture selected.

sssshhhh... you mustn't say things like that...! You will have the 'Well.. I have never had a single bug in P7' Brigade after you...

Of course, they will be covered by the excuse... well it was a P4 render and not a P7 one... even if it was within P7...

How is it that ALL the Beta Checkers didn't discover these bugs before?

Exactly. This question has been asked before and the general answer was... well... there are so many combinations of machines, etc., etc., that its impossible to find them all.

Easy solution... get more Beta testers to cover all combinations.

And the old excuse.. well... one or 2 bugs always get through... you have to accept that.

1 or 2 yes. As many as P7 is revealing...? Not acceptable in my book.

So, are these bugs Beetles, Cockroaches, Hornets, Yellow Jackets, ...or just plain old ordinary infestation of  ...Fire Ants? ;=]

Don't know what particular species they are, but they need a good dose of BUGOFF spray..

In the meantime, until somebody brings us the bugspray, and seeing how these eerily resemble Fireants, maybe we'd better get stomping! ;=]

Thanks, it wasn´t me...this was driving me nuts ;-) I use the P4 renderer when I make thumbs for my products, but I will have to do them in P6 then.

Should this bug be reported somewhere??

You could try reporting it to EF, but don't expect a response. I reported several things that were'nt working properlyy, but gave up through their general lack of interest.

BTW... one way you might get what you want in the P4 render mode... is to use one of the square props and apply your image to that as a background pic. Personnaly, I use a flattened box 'cos I get weird results on the square prop.

dphoadley ( ) posted Sun, 07 January 2007 at 6:19 AM

I use a flattened box too, because, while I can't prove it, I think it shows the displacements better (ie more mesh to displace) than a square does/would.

I find that single planes wont take an image well in P5 upwards. They were fine in P4 and PPP but for some reason no longer worked in P5 upwards.

I had to remake many of my earlier props that were single sided and worked fine in P4/PPP to give them some 'thickness'..

I will do that, but It annoys me since it´s a very simple image and I just would like it to work as it should.

Thanks everyone!!

**yvonnesnet:

Have just found a way to render with background image in P4 mode.

Load the image as normal.... in Display settings.. click on show background image...  click on use Background shader node.... then... in P4 Render Settings... select Render Over: Current BG shader...

You will get the image in preview mode, BUT... you have to switch off show background image before you render.

PS. Just found that it will also render if Render Over: Background picture is selected in P4 settings... and Use Background shader node is clicked off...the key thing is to switch off show background image prior to rendering.

Hmm that's interesting. scratches head So if you can SEE the image, you can't render it... but if you can't see it, you can render it... Odd...

Thanks for finding the workaround, ziggie.

Just out of curiosity, yvonnesnet.. why do you use the P4 renderer for the thumbnails? Is there some benefit that I haven't been aware if? I think this is the first time I've used the P4 renderer in a few years... I had even forgotten that it renders from the bottom and up

TrekkieGrrrl, doesn't this sound just like a plot twist for J K Rawlings?  (or maybe a Sci-Fi movie theme, ie Alan Rickman playing Leonard Nimoy playing Alan Rickman in Galaxy Quest II?)

Or maybe Leonard Nimoy playing Alan Rickman playing Leonard Nimoy in a remake of In Search?

Ziggie...WOW..that worked but seams kinda stupid that it works that way :-) You must have tried a lot to figure that one out.

TrekkieGrrl:
I use the P4 engine for my png´s just because they render a LOT faster on my computer, and when you have to make around 50 MAT files....I need a new computer ;-)

Yes... it is rather silly. As with all the faults I have personally found in P7, I keep trying different ways of working around them, because I want P7 to work so badly (that sounds wrong).

Despite what some people think, I like P7... I just want it to work to it's full potential and correctly.

A recent example: while I was trying to find out how to get the background image to work in P4 mode... I did a spot render... something I had done several times already with no  problem... and poof... back to the desktop.

No warning... no reason. Then when I tried to duplicate the same crash, I couldn't. Personally, I find that sort of thing erratic and very frustrating.

All I want is to be able able to have the confidence in P7 that allows me to use it for long sessions, without worrying that something is going to go wrong with it again. Or, even worse... I get a good session and get lulled into a false sense of security and then something goes wrong with it.

I am really looking forward to the release of a SR where hopefully all the creases have been ironed out.

Hi everyone,

I reported this to e-frontier and got a reply today that they know about this and that they hope to have a solution for this soon and hopefully a full fix in the upcoming service release.

Oooo, these bugs are getting annoying.  I'm part of the 'I've never had a bug-brigade', but honestly, that isn't even true anymore.  I've replicated a handful of what have been listed, so I know they are legit.

I have been so busy with work lately that I have only actually rendered two pics in P7, so I now know that I no longer have a valid pro-P7 voice.  I'm with Ziggie on the "I want it to work so badly", just, you know, not poorly...

I know bugs happen, but this is the first piece of software I have ever purchased right at the initial release.  This is a new experience for me.  By the time I bought P5 they were on SR2.  I only got P6 because it came with with the P7 pre-order.  (and personally, I found P6, even with the SRs, still quite buggy).

Annoying that I feel P5 is more stable (except for rendering in Firefly).

Once my work wanes a bit, and I get back into Poser more, I know I'm going to feel the brunt of all this.  I have a very large project planned and Poser's functionality is going to be a big make or break factor!

Damn.

Hairybiker ( ) posted Fri, 06 April 2007 at 3:55 AM

I'm just glad you found a work-around for this. I bought Poser7 three days ago and I was about to just roll back to Poser 4, which I had ABSOLUTELY no problems with for four years!! :-D

Cheers, Ziggie!
