Subject: Need help with poser file system - simple question

jjroland ( ) posted Wed, 10 January 2007 at 8:11 AM · edited Wed, 15 January 2025 at 4:12 AM

Someone said on a thread some pages back something to the effect of being able to have multiple runtime folders.  Ok - so how do I do that?  Can I rename runtimes within the parent Runtime folder?

So far only  1 out of about 20 downloads included installation instructions in the read me.

Where do all these files go?

(this info would be super in a sticky)

Thanks in advance!

External runtimes (available with P5 and above) allow you to install your content to folders outside of your Poser installation.  A couple of benefits include not losing content if you have to uninstall and reinstall, along with keeping your runtimes from becoming bloated and slowing down the Poser loading.

You CAN'T rename the runtimes inside Poser as those are hard coded into the program.

To create an external runtime, all you have to do is create a folder somewhere on your system (mine are out on a USB External Hard Drive) and name it for the type of content going in to it.  I currently hav 47 external runtimes named for things like Victoria 3, Hair, Lights, Michael 3 ... like that.

Most of your downloads should be zipped from the Runtime structure so installation is a snap.  Just point the zip program to your new folder and everything will be extracted to the appropriate places within the folder.  Just be certain NOT to name the new folder Runtime or Poser will become confused and will default back to the native Runtime when looking for elements of what you're adding to the scene.

Any content you purchase from DAZ has an installer that will allow you to browse to the folder you want to install to.

To link the external runtime, just navigate all the way up to the top of your Library palette where you see your Poser runtimes (i.e Poser 6 - Downloads).  Down at the bottom of the palette menu click on the + button and it will bring up a dialog box to Add Runtime.  It uses an Explorer-type window that allows you to browse to the new folder.  Just highlight the folder and click OK and you'll see your new Runtime in the Library palette.

I post this so much, I think I need to do a tut and convert it to pdf ... lol.

If you need further help, PM me through site mail and I'll send you some visuals.

Hey, I know with poser6 there are two main  libraries  for your poser content.  Your Poser6 (runtime) and (Downloads) If your content is in a ZIP file and you are unsure how to get those files into poser and your running a windows system not sure how it works for a Mac someone els might be able to tell you. Extract files to "C:Program FilesCurious LabsPoser 6Downloads"

Not sure if that is of any help to you.

I did not ask the question, but am glad I looked as it was something I have been wanting to know..I understand the concept, and want to put them on another drive as well.  Thank you for explaining this so well ..it is MUCH appreciated!! Now off to see if I can do this..

May I ask one more thing, it is same subject.  I am working with Poser 7 but should be same, I was able to direct poser 7 to my poser 6 runtime, no problem.  Now, I am considering taking poser 6 off puter, can I just copy them as well to the new runtime I will be making and just uninstall the program then?

UGH I am sorry I am NOT literate on this matter and sorry if I am not explaining myself well, I do not pretend to know much bout any of this.

Thank you again for all your help!!

If anyone has a runtime made ..a sample pic of it would be awesome for a dummy like me!!

Your Poser 6 Runtime is exactly the same as your Poser 7 Runtime unless you've installed some custom content so it's not a big worry.  Also, if you uninstall P6 it will leave the Runtimes on your hard drive and only uninstall the program files so the folder will still be available for you.
