Vue F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 30 6:52 am)
Lyne,
I have seen posts in other 3D forums where ATI cards have trouble with OpenGL. Frequently, when reading posts of Vue users with severe problems, it appears they are using ATI cards. Of course by turning OFF hardware acceleration, you are effectively rendering your ATI video card useless, but also creating a much larger burden on your cpu to render the wireframes (which is typically done in hardware).
Perhaps you should consider an NVidia card. I have them in 3 different computers and all of them run Vue6-I just fine.
best of luck, Chipp
Lyne - I don't believe your problem is the video card(although Nvidia does appear to work better with ALL 3d apps) Everything is very slow in V6 now(the latest update). This last update is totally fubared - roll back. A lot of people are having the same problem, also check over at at EON forums, various threads on this same issue :) I have 4G of ram & still crashing like a banchee(newest update).

Quote - I don't want to shell out the $$$ for a new video card... vue 5 works SUPER WELL...why would I need a new video card for vue 6? Maybe I better see about getting my money back?!?
Well, Vue does need a little more work, but I'm not having problems with my nVidia card. If you look around the web at different software forums, you will find that ATI OpenGL is flakey. I can name a number of modelling and animation apps that are having issues with ATI drivers...especially older drivers. Have you installed the latest drivers Lyne?

--------------- A life?! Cool!! Where do I download one of those?---------------
not sure I have update ATI drivers but hate to mess with aPERFECT RUNNING VUE 5...
I DID CHANGE MY SCREEN RES AND FONT SIZES TO MORE NORMAL AND I SELECTED OPEN GL - SOFTWARE ACCL.. .AND VUE 6 ACTUALLY WORKS A BIT BETTER!!
BUT HELP! PLEASE, WHICH XYZ ORDER SHOULD I PUT IN MY OPTIONS TO MAKE MY POSER FIGURE WIDGET CONTROLS MOVE THE THE CONTROLS ROTATED, ETC IN VUE 5!??!?!
ps i have not update vue 6 since the very first install little initial update as all other updates I heard were broken...so thats not a factor.
Life Requires Assembly and we all know how THAT goes!
sorry my sentance was not clear... I want my xyz order to be the same as vue 5... when I use my tools... ?
at least if using "software open gl" HELPS vue 6 that bodes well for my current card, yes?
hardware excel open gl CRASHED my machine and restarted it! LOL!!
Still... vue 5 is running like a champ and I can even use open gl in it with NO PROBLEM at all... windows update in the 4 vue all at the same time!! Just can't be THAT different with vue 6?? I really wish I had known about this!!
Life Requires Assembly and we all know how THAT goes!
I have a new machine with a Radeon x1600 Pro, 512 megs of ram, and Vue 6 openGL is working as it should.
Lyne, to me it seems it's the new poser import features that are the trouble, since Vue5 runs perfectly in openGL. Checking to import with Poser shader tree and reposing features are very resources intensive. My new machine looks a bit like yours, except that I have an Intel core 2 duo CPU running at 2x 2.13 ghz, and I have no problems, but I do have latencies if I use the new poser import options.

Well if it works with software OpenGL and crashes with hardware OpenGL, then it means it's DEFINITELY your card that's the problem. And, yes, it can be that different from Vue 5 to Vue 6. We were told Vue 6 was a rewrite 'from the ground up', or something like that. So, for sure the OpenGL implementations can be different. I would either:
Check out the Silo3D forum about the problems they have with ATI boards. The simple fact is, the problem could be your video card.
To me it sounds as well that your card/computer has a problem.
But regarding updates Lyne. What exactly is the point NOT to update when the version you have now is not working as well? What can you lose when trying an update? That others spread out news that some features are not working is absolutely not relevant in this context. Maybe exactly your issues are solved now. How can you know that?
One day your ship comes in - but you're at the airport.
THIS IS WHAT I GOT BACK FROM TECH... OBVIOUSLY NOT REALLY READING ALL MY INFORMATION... I NEVER UPDATED MY VUE !! :(
AND I AM USING THE SAME SETTINGS IN VUE 5 AS 6...AND IMPORTING THE SAME OBJECTS...
SOUNDS LIKE I GIVE UP ON VUE 6 OR GET A NEW GRAPHICS CARD....IF VUE 6 DOES NOT LIKE ATI, THEN EVEN UPDATING MY ATI DRIVER WOULD NOT HELP, RIGHT?
I AM AT A LOSS AND I GUESS I WILL HAVE TO CALL OREGON NEXT MONDAY....EVERYONE IS DOING FINE WITH VUE 6 (IN GENERAL) BUT ME?? ?!?!
FROM TECH AT E-ON:
Well first of all, it might be interesting to compare display options in both Vue 5 and Vue 6 to ensure they are the same, and of course try the same object in both.
A potential problem might come from the latest Vue 6 update which changes the way remaining memory is evaluated, and as the whole on disk data swapping strategy is based on this, we suspect that Vue swaps data onto disk way too often now.
We have therefore decided to revert to the old behaviour, to ensure a better memory handling.
Best regards.

WALTHER... IF I HAVE NOT TRIED THE UPDATE, SHOULD I, WHEN EVEN E-ON IS GIVING UP ON IT... ERG!
Life Requires Assembly and we all know how THAT goes!
Lyne have you updated at all? I would STRONGLY recommend you update using patch 288741 - it does help quite a bit - but still its not as speedy as V5I - I think there is still a mem. leak somewhere, but it does improve speed when moving things around and the amount you can import etc etc. Keep in mind more of the complex features are still not working or not up to speed yet.
Also, turn off openGL lighing this helps enormously & for me I found this feature not very useful to begin with - just another mem hog.
I am off to post the following back on the tech forum...after talking to tech more...
"Well... I think the best course of action I can take is to un-install vue 6 as it stands...it's been too tempting sitting on my machine, luring me in to try and 'make' it work....so I will just stop torturing myself.... and WAIT patiently for the 'final' version...then re-download that, and patch it as needed... and go from there... since you did not say anything about my ATI video card being a problem (as a few folks in forums say might be the problem).... I will just hang in.. make sure my video drivers are up to date for my card...and RELAX... give you all a chance to finish this great program... that I DON'T really want to give up on.... :)"
and FYI... I keep open gl and backgroud draw OFF... just was TRYING the software open gl for a test.... and I am going to go make sure my ATI video card does have the latest driver for it in the meantime... I am sure that e-on wants their software to work with most video cards as well as get the poser import working.... so again... I will just WAIT and use vue 5 and ENJOY how well IT works for me for now! :))
Thanks so much for trying and working with me on this! :)

Okay... got a super duper new ATI driver update ... AMD bought out ATI...and before I install the "final" vue 6 I will check again for a video card update...my driver was about a year and half old...and my son says that there have been huge important updates to driver technology... I also am keeping my LOWER screen res... no more 1280X.... not quite down to 1024... ick on 19"... but settled on a tick above 1024 think it is...
Just too much stress with my health stuff to add the lure of what vue 6 will eventually do on my particular set up... BUT Vue 5 is calling me more than ever with it's really sharp fuctioning!! :))
Sooo back to the calm vue 5... ooohhmmmm oooohhhmmmm ;)
Life Requires Assembly and we all know how THAT goes!
E-on has given up? I don't understand. All they are saying is that they found a behaviour in the last update not so good and therefore will correct that.
But I still do not understand the issue of this post here Lyne. You have a problem, fine. On the other hand you try to avoid everything that could change your situation. But, what do you lose when you update your V6I and see wether it makes a difference?
One day your ship comes in - but you're at the airport.
It's a matter of "stress" Walther... really I get soo excited and then so frustrated... and now I RELAX with vue 5 and poser 6 and life is good again....
I did NOT mean that e-on is giving up... but they did NOT read my tech post really, and my extra post I added over at e-on... but that is okay... I talked to another e-on person who suggested not only making sure my video driver is up to date (I just did that) but to UNINSTALL my version of 6....and then install a new version (not patch up etc.) and I like that idea better since no matter what I do, it does not like me to import poser figures. I am not going to buy a new video card for sure... mine is fine.
So...If I do not stress... it's okay... really...don't stress for me!
I had felt to give up on it myself...but it's much smarter to wait for a BIG final "update" and start again then with a fresh install. I am sure it will work out fine eventually. :) Vue 4 did...and vue 5 i did... soo too will vue 6 later... THE most important thing in life is being happy and relaxed... and I got silly over this...so now I stop and wait. :))

FYI - I've been running ATI cards for the last number of years and I've only had problems with OpenGL in Vue4 - probably because my system didn't have the 'horsepower' to drive the OpenGL fast enough.
In my current system - VUE5, Athlon64 3700 and ATI 9800 PRO Radeon, I'm using hardware acelaration and my system is very stable.
VUE 5 iNFINITE was a slow crawling slug on my system also...1 gig ram, intel 4 2.66 ghz. processor, and older NVIDIA gefoce 5200 fx card. Got a new card>>>BFG nvidia Gefoce 6200 over-clocked 256 meg ddr. Didn't help...changed from open gl software to hardware accellerated and it simlpy flies now! Glad i checked out this thread! One full year of regrets have been lifted! A happy camper now!

I filled in all the right numbers, etc to TECH support at e-on... then I posted this:
I will try this here one time, as I don't have much faith in the "system"... but I have HOPE... I use a PC. My son just checked it all out and even replaced my 2 gigs of ram (and now my vue 5 Infinite is RUNNING VERY FAST AND WILL EVEN USE OPEN GL IF I WANT...that is how good my machine is!)...
I have:
AMD Athlon 3000+ 64 bit motherboard/cpu made for XP HOME SR 2.
2 Gigs of DDR 400 ram sitting in duel channel ram slots.
Video card Vision Tek XTASY ATI Radeon X700 with 256MB DDR Memory
19 inch ViewSonic G90f (graphics monitor) running at 1280X1024. I do have "large fonts" on, because of my vision problems.
My problem is that my PC version of the beta Vue 6 is sooo slow with any imported figure... each window updates one at a time... Moving the imported figures is slow, like they are "HEAVY" for vue...just ONE figure in an empty scene! (with a simple single specular cloud atmosphere) I HAVE turned OFF open gl, background draw, every single thing not needed.
I do not mind working in wireframe (however oddly the "wireframe" in vue 6 shows as a MASS OF RED LINES not just a few lines as in vue 5). I see my MAC friends working fine with figures and plants - complex scenes and I am so frustrated! I heard the last update BROKE some things, especially in regards to the poser import so I have not put that on.
I guess I just need reassurance that the e-on team IS working for the PC side of the software bugs and that my vue 6 will someday really work as well as vue 5 .... and will have all the poser import/posing ability it should? OH and I use Poser 6.3 only.
I broke my own rule, I was so excited for vue 6 infinite..my rule to buy a "beta"...and I thought it would work for me on my PC as well as my MAC friends reported... but... NOT! :(
Thank you for any help or suggestions.
Lyne Masamitsu
and please folks do not ask me to update to xp 64...all my other (some very old) software and my $$ is just fine... I will not spend more for vue 6... and I DO have patients... just WISH I could use the beautiful render engine I see on my PC when I render ONLY sky and water... yes, even water looks good in 6 to me....after my fights with water in vue 5 (solved by usign a terrain in 5)...
But I thought I should put in an official complaint there instead of just talking in forums about the situation. :)
