I tried re-finding it, but there were a few posts on the applying a texture, getting the "bum" error, which i remember was prevalent in P4.  I had written this eons ago and forgot about it, but it might be useful now again.  Though written for p4, it should work in any version I would imagine.  Hope its helpful!

Poser 5 and up cannot and do not need to generate bum bump maps from jpgs, they can use the jpgs (or any other image format Poser reads).

If my poser asks for a bum map i just click on any old one to save it the bother of asking if i want to keep looking for it..
