Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 20 11:41 am)
Next tiime I make any new poser products (I haven't in a long time), I'm already planning on using Poser's raytracing ability on things like mirrors, metal and glass surfaces, etc.
I agree that it's long overdue to start supporting those things. The reason they are not, for the most part is because the features would not work in P4, but for that the simple solution si to include both P4 and P5 -7 versions (like they're already doing with the shaders).

You know, the gripe is all well and good when you're talking about creating eyes using brushes and layers in PS or PSP but when you're using photographs it's impossible to get eyes with no reflections because of the lighting used when taking the photographs.
I, for one, use the ones I can find with the fewest reflections but they are there and if you want real eyes for your characters it's just something you have to deal with. If you want us to spend the time to clone out the reflections it might just raise the prices on some texture packages because we don't work for free. We all try to make the best products we can at the most reasonable price but our time is worth something, isn't it? If I spent 40 + hours cloning out reflections in eye textures I sure hope I'd be paid something for that work, on top of all the hours spent creating skin textures, makeup textures, second skins, testing everything ... it's only fair, don't you think?

I agree and reflections arn't the only p5 technology that are overdue for adoption.

no it isn't
all it takes is a bit more effort from merchants to make nice eye maps,I edited this one in 10 mins
after I read this thread,I too hate to see a great looking eye promo only to find out that the reflection is on the map...come on,no more reflections please.
Funny YouTube video of the week - Bu De Bu Ai
well what I'm talking about is not eye reflections, but reflections on surfaces like tables, windows, mirrors, etc
I don't need eyes to be that realistic, but I do like shiny surfaces to be believable

**Okay... I'll make a plug for my products here. Mainly because they are what you are asking for. Eyes for V4 without the highlights on the iris. And if you want some that are "outside the norm", I also have these that do not have "reflections" painted on. The light areas you see in the eyes were done that way as part of the texturing.
Those help any?**
You are right. tastiger, those fake reflections look nice - but only if you use them with the matching light and maybe environment, son in fact they're a bit outdated.
It's not that hard to get rid of the reflections. Take a photo-shoot of eyes that contain just small reflections and blend parts of the eye that are free of them over the unwanted highlights - or mix parts of both eyes until you get a new iris (and this is the only part that really matters here as the pupil can be painted and the eyewhite comes from somewhere else). No "witchwork" indeed and like The3dZone said it's made in ten minutes or so once you have some routine.
If you badly want some reflections like windows or such you can add a matching map to the cornea or so - but with V4's enhanced materials I think even this looks fake. At least: If you look into the eyes of a person vis a vis you will not see fancy windows or photographers reflecting in the eyes but most of the time just light. So the reflcting environment is more kind of a special effect for (very) close-up portraits.
I'm not always right, but my mistakes are more interesting!
And I am not strange, I am Limited Edition!

Being a merchant myself - I am well aware of what you are saying as to time and effort - but remember - no one sets the prices for your creations but yourself - ie: you may charge what you wish, whether people will buy your products at that price is something that is beyond your control - however from what I have seen, people will pay that extra dollar for quality work and then there is the point of setting the standard for others to work to.
If you just maybe put in that little extra effort on things such as eyes people WILL notice it and be prepared to pay that little extra - then it will flow on down the line and others will try to keep pace.
But if everyone sat around saying "it's too hard to clone out this and that" we wouldn't have seen the advances in quality over the years.
I will also add that this is not a personal attack on you - just my general opinion on how design of textures etc gets influenced.
I'll also add that I am not a real fan of textures cloned from photos as photos always seem to have little highlights or shadows that just wouldn't be there if you were to remove the skin and stretch it out - by this I am talking about texture maps that actually have the breasts defined and shadows in the naval - it goes on and on - and it's these little things that stick out under good lighting.
I'm actually on the lookout for some good hand painted textures that showcase the artist's ability to improvise and create something natural looking.
Given the technology of the time there was some really great textures for the Poser 3 folk - and all of them with a photo in sight....

See image. That was rendered in Photoshop. The three images surrounding the duller shot were touched up in photoshop. The dull image was not. Notice the light reflecting off the cornea. Wouldn't this work for what you're talking about? Also, additional effort is not something tht should be looked down on if it raises the quality of the work. If that means you also have to raise the price, so be it. People will pay if the difference in quality and usability justifies it.
maybe those that make the eyes with painted on reflection want them to work 'out of the box'
if your using true reflection in the eyes then you need to make sure there's something to reflect,(which could be as simple as a couple self illuminated boxes placed off camera),but if the end user is rendering a figure without an environment then there's nothing to reflect but the default gray poser void
I like to use reflective surfaces on my models but they are a huge drain on rendertime & can only be use sparringly, especially if you mix displacement in as well(& those two when combined in poser have their own eccentricites),it looks great..but takes forever to render
Good luck with this one.
Many of us have been saying the same thing since P5 came out. The same with painted hi-lights on hair and skin textures. It is getting worse now. With better lighting, Material rooms and render engines, There is absolutely no excuse for it. Even a simple trans/alfa map can do wonders. I hate having to set my lights up to look right because of hi-lights. That the p4 mentality still at large.
The amount of time to create eyes without baked on reflections is very little. Pretty much every texture set I have ever bought has only one eye and copies with the hue changed. So the, " it takes hours to do this and it will cost you," doesnt really hold water.
It could be worse. There are still merchants that can't even get the relection to match on both eyes.

- and that's why nearly all my V3 characters, no matter where they came from, end up with one of MaskEdit's Natural Eyes. There are versions with and without reflections, 28 colours, all for $5. One of my most-used purchases. I'm not associated with MaskEdit in any way, except as a happy customer. You should also take a look at the TotalEyez from Predatron market.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/index.php
Those textures are plain and the reflexion is done by a map.

OK - so i like to have a gripe now and then and I have always been one that talks of using the newer features in the applications we use - so I'm sorry if this offends some merchants but here we go..
It's 2007 - we now have Poser 7 and D|S both of which do reflections - Poser has had this ability since version 5. ( how long ago was that released - not to mention it was also free not so long ago}
However I'm browsing the store today and I come across some really good sets of eyes, even some for Victoria 4 - but they all have reflections painted on them! this is great if you are using Poser 4 / PP - but it just don't cut it with later versions - it's overkill.
Please Merchants - start making eyes without reflections - it's just too much work to clone out the reflections......
