Subject: Unhappy with Poser 7

MamaBird ( ) posted Thu, 15 March 2007 at 2:32 PM · edited Mon, 03 February 2025 at 2:47 AM

I don't really like Poser 7. I admit applying materials has improved but I have had problems with the cloth room. However, my main problem is with the rendering. It takes forever and I have a dual core processor. Even when it has finished I am not that impressed. I think Poser 4 and 5 did a much better job at rendering.

I had hoped the option of rendering in a separate window would return from Poser 5 but if it has, I don't know how to activate it.

I don't like the manual controls for rendering. I have to apply the auto controls to the manual setting and then take off the portions I don't want.

Friends had told me that Poser 7 images will pop out at you. Well the only thing that pops out for me is my eyes as I wait and wait and wait for the rendering to end just so I can get an image that , to me, is not half as good as the previous Poser had been.

Am I the only one unhappy with 7?

no, there are several folks who have posted here concerning problems with P7. however, post a screencap of yer render settings. the experts may be able to spot something that will help ya.

Good idea.  Here they are. I just go to the Auto Settings, move the bar to the highest quality then go to Manual Settings, Acquire from Auto, remove Cast shadows and render. Then I go outside and read a book while Poser renders.

Maybe someone can tell me how to get Poser to render faster. I have tried all the tips I have seen in other post, none seemed to work for me.  Also, maybe someone can tell me how they get finished images that look worthwhile. After all that waiting you would think the finished image would be fantastic.

turning off texture filtering may help image quality, but one of the coders indicated that setting texture filtering to "fast" would allow faster renders than either "none" or "quality". the other things you already know that will speed rendering but decrease image quality: decrease bounces, decrease pixel samples, increase shading rate, decrease image map size, decrease number and quality of lights.

It's almost funny. If you go for faster renderings you end up with something that has almost no detail at all.  But at least you get a fast render. Now that's what I call an option.

I seem to have more crashes with this version than I did before. Not to mention I just don't think the quality of the renders is really worth it. Did I mention that before?

I am seriously thinking about pulling out my old Poser and putting this one up until they release another service pack that takes care of some of the problems.

you've upped the threads to 4, yes?
(Edit, Preferences, General Preferences, Render then under Render Process set number of threads right over to 4 )

Hey MamaBird you can lower that Irradiance caching setting too no need for it to be at 100. I have mine set at 10

No I didn't. I didn't even know about that. Will try it out tonight. And I thought I had done a good job of reading the manual...well, I did skip a lot.

Thanks for letting me know about this.

Sealtm2, will do that as well. Good I posted here. Getting some good tips.

Maybe Poser 7 is not a piece of ....., like I first thought.

Drop your Max Bucket size down to 32 or even 16 which is what ef recommends also.

If you've come from Poser 4 or 5, you really have to re-think your inks when it comes to 7.

If you want to make the most of 7's improvements, it's not just about changing your render settings, it's about changing how you texture and light your images.

If you're essentially rendering the same scene in both packages, there will be little difference. That's been my experience...limited though it may be :).

If we can hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominos will fall like a house of cards...checkmate!

Quote - Maybe someone can tell me how to get Poser to render faster.

Not turning up everything to eleven would be my recommendation. The visual difference between a 0.5 and a 0.1 shading rate is minimal, so is the difference between 6 and 3 pixel samples (if you're not using DOF or motion blur). The difference in render time, however, is not minimal.
