Subject: Lighting a TV screen prop

What is the best way to produce a realistic light that comes out of a TV? Is it just by putting a spotlight inside the TV prop and produce the light outward the front screen?

Another question, is there a freebie prop about a big/full angel wings? I've looked in the free stuff here by typing "wings" and "angel" but I did not like anything in the results.

Depending on how else you plan to light your scene, you could consider using Poser 6+ Gather Node. More info can be found here:

As for wings, there are a number of sets in the Free Stuff section right here in Renderosity:

-= Simple Fae Wings for Aiko 3 =- by UweG
Wings by boroda
Weird Wings for Viki2 by Mechanismo
3 pair of wings by Bice
...among others.

Hope this helps.

In terms of getting the TV screen lit, yor best bet is to plug the image on the screen into the ambient, rather than the diffuse, channel. Then, for lighting the room around it, you could go for the gather node - but that can be tricky, and works best for objects that are closer to the screen. Better bet would be to place a spotlight inside the TV screen (or just outside, if you prefer). Use a blueish colour (TVs rarely project an accurate light based on the image on them, but it tends to be an all-over blueish colour instead - in my experience, anyway). If you put the spot inside the Tv, make sure you have the 'cast shadows' unchecked in the TV's properties tab.

I think that you might need to set a translucense value for the screen too, with a spot light inside.

I did some experiments. Seems that a spotlight ignores objects close to the light. So, a spotlight set inside a screen works fine, even with shadows on. Moreover, shadows are required to get a resonable effect, IMHO.

I came out with a good effect if I attach the same picture I have in the screen to the light (kind of image based lighting). But, lower the images intensity to 0.5.

Play with the lights distance parameters. Also the angle width limit (160) can be removed. If you don't know how: Double click the parameter and insert a new value for maximum.

Below is a sample picture. All boxes/spheres have materials "out of the box". There is one pointlight (40% intensity) to illuminate the scene. The rest is from one spotlight attached to the monitor. The whole scene (including the TV-prop) can be downloaded from here

You can have a more "dramatic" effect if you set "Angle Start" higher (100 in this sample). And the screen materials ambiente channel is set to 1.5 (insteed of 1.0)
