Subject: Want critiques?

kobaltkween ( ) posted Sat, 24 March 2007 at 8:50 PM

i can say i don't expect others to change their images, nor am i likely to change mine.  just because i can see some weak points, doesn't mean i think the picture should  be reworked.  i'm not giving feedback so that anyone can change anything.  i think of course everyone should do what they want, but i just don't think people should feel they have to make corrections based on critiques. just my 2 cents...

RandC ( ) posted Sat, 24 March 2007 at 9:04 PM

I agree but a WIP/Crit gallery would be nice.

DarkPascual ( ) posted Sat, 24 March 2007 at 9:23 PM

I think that if someone gives and advice in one image, and you want to apply that in that same pic and repost, cool. If you don´t, just keep it in mind for the next one...

Perfection is a path, not a goal...

kobaltkween ( ) posted Sat, 24 March 2007 at 9:35 PM

i agree with you both.

kalon ( ) posted Sat, 24 March 2007 at 9:59 PM

Is someone is on your favorite artists list, don't you get notifications regardless of which gallery they post in? That's a question, I've never received a notification from the WIP gallery. But if that is the case, can't we just use the Work in Progress gallery that already exists?

KarenJ ( ) posted Sun, 25 March 2007 at 6:01 AM

jpiazzo, got you added.
DarkPascual, do you want to join?

kalon, yes, you will get an ebot for any upload, so you can post in whatever gallery/genre you wish.

RandC, you can post in the WIP genre. I talked about the idea of a WIP or Critique gallery back on page... 4 I think.

I have a sugestion but I'm not sure if it's possible to do. When we get an ebot that a picture from a favourite artist has been posted, the ideal would be that the mail text it would contain the comment that we make when we add an artist as a favourite. I say this because I see that most people here already put a comment like "critique group" in this ocasion. When we receive an ebot it would help to know if that artist is from this group or not, in order not to take the risk to critique someone that doesn't belong to the group. I, at least, have several other favourite artists than the ones in this group and it's getting hard to know when to critique or not.

See ya!!!

Just want to say I just pulled the image I posted tonight, Why??  Because the critique I received from this group on it was fantastic and I'm going to re-work it and re-post hopefully a better version.
Thanx to those that had the time to view and critique, much obliged, I'm gonna enjoy this!!!!

One of the reasons English is so popular throughout the world is that it can be really screwed up and still underdstandable (lol).

You're English is fine DarkPasual.

There is already a WIP gallery...  If you care to modify and re-post an image based on feedback, it may be the most straightforward to do it the way TheFixer suggests, because if you update an existing image I don't believe new ebots are sent out.  It would also be nice to start from a clean slate of comments, because hopefully at least some of them will no longer apply.

I like the way Deecey handled the revision to her image,  I was wondering about the best way to go about it without losing the information gained.

Unfortunately, you can't comment on an image twice. So, if you're reading this Deecey, the image just totally glows now. Great adjustment!

linkdink ( ) posted Sun, 25 March 2007 at 9:35 PM

Yes, this can work. I just got good feedback from Tiara, SoCalRoberta and Cobaltdream.

I posted a fixed version 'cause I still had my project file, the fixes were relatively easy, and most of all because the crits were right on the money.

On adding "critique group" or something to comments: I kind of think it would be cool if such comments were given "casually," as if they were the normal thing.  By giving a good critique, you are in a sense identifying yourself as part of the group -- no preface necessary.  But this is surely no big deal, anything you wish to write that is helpful is certainly OK by me.

On the other hand, if  people felt more free around here to offer critiques -- and see it done right, and accepted graciously  -- they might just start criquing without bothering to formally sign up in the thread.  And then the Group would have to be considered a smashing success, yes?

Sign me up! Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!

As far as the re-posting fixed--if it's a simple fix, or something I SHOULD have in it, I'll go "D'OHHHHHHH!" and fix it.  If it's some ungodly complicated thing to fix, I'll probably try not to let it happen again.

I want to grow as an artist, and this sounds like a way to do it.  This hobby is SO complicated, everyone can learn something new! I KNOW I can.

Can I just remind everyone joining now that you need to add to favourites the artists on the list in the first post of this thread. Otherwise you won't get notifications when they upload! (alternatively, you can check everybody's gallery every day, but that could be quite time-consuming.)

vince - i would love for people to critique my past works.  i'm going to be trying to critique some past works.  right now i'm just keeping up with the usual weekend rush, but since you've asked i'll try to hit some of your gallery.

oh, and your welcome! to linkdink and rutra.  i'm glad you can get something out of my comments.  as a general note, i know my comments are verbose and hit quite a few points.  this doesn't mean i take myself very seriously.  take what you can use and leave what you can't.  and i'm really enjoying looking at everyone's work.  this is some great stuff.

as for the artcharts... well, it can't be doing but so much.  the only people who have added me to their favorites have been other group members!

kobaltkween ( ) posted Mon, 26 March 2007 at 5:03 AM

oh, and i just want to say this.  someone mentioned in the other thread that this is an arbitrary and artificial way to get comments.  for me it's not.  i would rather have detailed critiques, and i would rather give them.  i find myself taking much longer to write two or three purely positive lines that are also meaningful.  i just don't do, "love it!  it's perfect!" in general.  it's not me.  but a lot of people don't want thorough critiques, and for various highly respectable reasons.  this group identifies matches me up with the kind of people i want to comment on, and who i want comments from.  otherwise, i won't comment much.  asking for thorough critiques is the natural way to get me to comment, not doing enticing thumbnails or posting technically perfect work.

thefixer ( ) posted Mon, 26 March 2007 at 5:12 AM

I agree with you, what is arbitrary and artificial is "you comment on mine and I'll comment on yours" mentality of the "buddy" system that some use!!

Quote - Dear Acadia,

This is a notification that you made it onto this week's Art Charts at Renderosity.com, ranking 4th on the list of favorite artists! Furthermore, because you were a favorite artist, we featured "Ashley", which seems to be your most popular image to-date.

You can view the Art Charts by clicking here.

I'm somebody!!!!  🆒

I have to go and look at "Ashley" because I honestly can't recall what that image looks like.

You know people are going.."WTF".......lmao!
I think this group is great because I now get to see art that I normally wouldnt have.

LaVonne ( ) posted Mon, 26 March 2007 at 10:31 AM

I think it's hilarious!

What makes it funny is alot of the "unknowns" are really talented artists and just didn't have the network of friends to get recognized as such in the galleries.

I think it's great and I hope it opens people's eyes to the true meaning of the galleries...to display ART, not win a popularity contest!

kobaltkween ( ) posted Mon, 26 March 2007 at 11:31 AM

well, i'm sure some will see this as a popularity issue.  but i notice we're not anywhere else.  we haven't taken over highest ranked or even most commented.  and i suspect the art chart effect will die off once this gets steady.  we each had lots of people add us at once.  i'd be very surprised if the art charts were time independent.

pjz99 ( ) posted Mon, 26 March 2007 at 11:43 AM

Well, seeing as there aren't any cash prizes or worldwide fame at stake - I think it's just kind of humorous.  I imagine in a week or two the chart will settle down a bit.  Too funny.

Anasta ( ) posted Mon, 26 March 2007 at 12:46 PM

I think its a great thing! I'm sure after a few weeks it'll settle down and go back to relatively normal but the major bonus we'll get is now people will see our names and maybe view some of our stuff, see that we're getting a large amount of critical comments and maybe, just maybe they'll be brave enough to go about it on their own. That was the general idea behind this group correct?

I've always wanted more critical comments on my images, this group was a small way of guaranteeing that (did I just invent another word again?) So with us completely taking over the favorite artists chart at least for this week, we'll possibly get more views from people who would never have heard of us!

So cheers to everyone, its good to see we're making a difference! :D

AnAardvark ( ) posted Mon, 26 March 2007 at 1:00 PM

I think though that new members will still be likely to hit the top of the charts as all the existing members add them as favorites.

Well, we're at 52 names. You know a good idea when something is successful when it becomes a logistical nightmare.

I can no long distinguish between my regular faves and my critique group. Whenever someone posts a new image that I have as a fave I have to run back here to make sure they're on the list.

Also, I'd like to be able to subcatogorize my critique group artists. There are artists that I simply can't critique because I'm not familiar with the genre they're representing. Also I've notice some people are using other apps other than Poser. I'm fine with that, but I can't really critique on a technical issue when someone is using Vue. I've never used Vue. Similarly, I frequently use Max. That's why I'd like to catagorize the faves into subfolders.

Let me be blunt--THE APP DOESN'T REALLY MATTER!

If someone uses Poser exclusively, then It might.  Almost everyone uses a combo of apps, nowadays.

The real point is to figure out what looks good, what looks off, or wrong and making helpful comments to correct any gaffs or stumbles.  If they are apps used, that you know--be as pointed about the fine points as you want.

Simple stuff like someone's eyes being pointed in different directions, we ALL know what's wrong.
