How can I get LWO 7.5 files to work in Poser 5  tried pose ray to turn into a obj. did not work it says it needs a plug-in for poser - I can't find it anywhere

Khai ( ) posted Sun, 25 March 2007 at 6:36 PM

plugin for poser? not one that I know of.. you mean path to POVRAY which I know comes up? ignore it and save out as OBJ. you don't need Pov to run Poseray.

if i try to load it into poser as an import lwo it has a pop up that it needs a plug-in the poseray hasa weird thing as soon as it loads it tells me it cant find the disk? cant cancel it so I have to shut down poseray - does it every time - this file is not on a disk

Hi johnfields,

There are two ways. 1) In Lightwave,  export your item as a Lightwave 5 file,  then import Lightwave 5 file into Poser 5.

  1. In lightwave,  export your item as an obj file.( make sure to apply the UVmap with the surface editor ),  then in Poser 5 import the obj.  Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Patorak

interesting. I use Poseray a lot and I've not seen this at all.
I suggest downloading it again and reinstalling.. ( http://mysite.verizon.net/sfg0000/ to make sure it's the current upto date version)

Why not use Lightwave layout to render?

Khai ( ) posted Sun, 25 March 2007 at 7:14 PM

erm guys? your assuming he has lightwave.. there are a lot of LW freebies out there which are format 6 +

tho I think I saw that poser 7 with the import patches will read 7.5 format now...

patorak ( ) posted Sun, 25 March 2007 at 7:41 PM

I thought he was surfin' the 'wave.  Hey johnfields want me to convert them for you?

johnfields ( ) posted Sun, 25 March 2007 at 8:16 PM

Hi johnfields,

Email me at    chieftanoclan7@sbcglobal.net    Tell me what format you would like them in i.e obj or lightwave 5,  and I'll have them right back to you.

Cheers,
Patorak

PoseRay works with the **Serenity** mesh.  I just re-checked it.  It is actually on the gallery as a test render.  Not being able to access the disk sounds like a problem with low free space or a locked file.

The attached image shows the model loaded in PoseRay

And here is the model loaded in Poser 6 after being exported from PoseRay as wavefront.

xantor ( ) posted Sun, 25 March 2007 at 10:00 PM

It worked for me in poseray as well and converted to wavefront object ok with the mapping.

It is quite a big object (28 megabytes).

I can't recommend strongly enough that anyone who can spare the $150 or so should get Deep Exploration. It can't be beat for a good reliable format translator.  I do most of my Poser modeling in Lightwave and use that to make 3ds and obj versions of the models (LW's native export doesn't always give the result I need).

One nice thing about it too is that when you convert a model and save it in another folder, it will even copy the textures to the new folder.

Where can you get Deep Exploration for $150? The Right Hemisphere website shows that the current version will be $500. That will price it way out of my league.

I d/l Blender and started to try to figure it out - I'm fairly certain it's given me a brain tumor! This is gonna take some studying!

Blender is one of the most difficult free modelers to figure out
I think  I managed to make a cube  with it once tho.

If anyone can find a good place to host the Serenity model, let me know. I received permission from Sean Kennedy (the guy who made the Lighwave model) to convert it for use in Poser last year.

Some statistics:

  • The model has over 242,000 polygons, which may make it too unwieldy for use in Poser.
  • The model comes with 178 jpg texture files, ranging in size from 10k to 350k.
  • The base obj file is approximately 43M in size (after splitting the verticies, smoothing, and UV mapping). The Poser cr2/ rsr/ png files will probably be around 300k in size... I never finished the conversion since the obj file was so big.
  • The final zip file will be over 29M in size, which is too large to host as a freebie at either my site or Vanishing Point. As a side note: when I offered the Blockade Runner, at 11M in size, I received an e-mail from my hosting company that I was going through bandwidth too fast and I was running the risk of exceeding my limit for the month.

As another side note, be careful of converting files and sending them to people to be "helpful". Unless you have permission from the original author, this could be called "unauthorized redistribution", which tends to be frowned upon.
A friend of mine got yelled at by the community when he tried to be "helpful" and publicly offered to convert a Vue model to obj format for someone.
