You have two choices:
Use Clay's fire. To my knowledge no one has ever done something better with procedurals, volumetrics or whatever. It's not terribly realistic for some scenes, but it is a good start.
Or you use a 2D pic of fire. Search for fire on Google images, get a rather large one, photoshop out whatever ya else there is in the scene, plaster it on a 2D shape and voila!
Or a combo of the two
In the attached image the fire is actually a supernova from NASA for the explosion mapped on a sphere. So go nuts, it's just a matter of finding the right image off Google or taking your own.
