Subject: Alerts for new freebies?

FranOnTheEdge ( ) posted Sat, 05 May 2007 at 4:47 AM · edited Sun, 09 February 2025 at 6:25 AM

Is it still okay to mention new freebies in this forum? Or is that no longer allowed now that we have a freestuff forum?

Just thought I'd better ask before putting my foot in it...

Sure you can..you've been announcing in the freestuff forum first,  which is the way to do it for your own 👍

But for other freebies elsewhere you may have found, sure..go ahead ;)

Hi All,

But it sure would be more centralised to have all the freebie sightings and announcements together in one place, though.....  Some of us use more than one application, even if we have our favourite one we use more of the time....  or, I'm just a greedy little freebie scavenger.

The thing is, I usually only regularly frequent 2 forums, Bryce and Wings, so unless someone alerts us in those forums, I wouldn't know about new stuff immediately.  I'd only go to the Freebie forum to search for something specific.  Probably once in a few months.  So I was thinking of those people who, say for instance... only go to the DazStudio forum, such people might not see that new freebies are available in the Freebie Forum if they don't go there.

So are you saying don't post alerts for my own freebies in here?  Only for other people's?

Just asking...

Oh no, you can post your own here,  just announce it in the actual freestuff forum also.  If you find some other cool freebies elsewhere, you dont have to have an announcement for those in the freestuff forum and can post it here as well.

Might check with the mods of the forums you frequent and ask if they can place a link or something in the headers to the freestuff forum for the reason you gave above too ;)

Okay doakie.  It may be that being into texturing myself at the moment, I may actually frequent the freestuff forum more often than I think I will, but not if past experience is anything to go by...

It's nice to have the freedom to post in more than the one place, I think myself I'd be inclined to post fully in the actual FreeStuff Forum, but want to put up a simple post with just a link to the new stuff in my favourite place, Bryce Forum.

But I'm wanting to try textures out in more than just Bryce, I want to try them out in DazStudio too - in fact I posted a thread about that.  So it's nice to know I can post about new stuff here too.

Online Now!

Yes, you need something to apply them to (Create>Primitive and select the Plane from the drop down list for example), then you open the Surfaces palette (View>Tabs>Surfaces), use the drop down at the top to pick the target surface (there will be only one for the plane), and click the button next to or under (it depends which tab of the palette you are using) the Diffuse colour bar, then select browse for image and load your copy of Fran's texture. Once you have applied it like that the texture will appear in the list under the Browse and None entries, so if you want to apply it to something else you just pick it from there.

A couple of questions,
1] Is there much of a demand for D|S specific freebies? If so I'll put up up the props and textures I make. Personaly, I don't have access to poser anymore, so any models I make are used in either D|S or Moray (once the new version is released by Povray.)

2] anyone recommend a free file hosting service till I start on a website?

Here's a good file host
http://www.sharecg.com/
Basically unlimited everything (bandwidth, file storage, etc.)
No pop-up ad trolls either.

Friends don't let friends use booleans.

Thanks! That's a start at any rate. Eventually I'll have to get off my butt and get a website going...arg.
