Original thread asked how to alter the default scene in Bryce (see link).   Fran was last one to post to it.  She raised another concern that I wonder if anyone knows how to overcome or trick.

She pointed out that once you have saved a scene of your liking to default it will open that way every time but................ if you select filenew document once Bryce is running you no longer get your preferred blank slate and camera settings.  I will get the sky I saved but camera settings, director settings and plane mats go back to the out-of-the-box setup.

Any help?

The first thing to do when you load Bryce (and it loads your default scene) is to save a Camera dot. I think that works.

Then if you do a 'new' you can click the dot and get your camera settings back.

Camera dot?

skiwillgee ( ) posted Tue, 12 June 2007 at 1:02 PM

@ Spit

Yay!   that works better but isn't the end all.   I experimented and, yes, the dot will restore the camera and director angles if the the previous scene had the dot set originally.

I tried this.  I opened bryce and it opened my saved default as desired.  I added a different sky, changed a couple camera settings (dotting them as I went).  I changed the the infinite plane mat and saved the entire scene to a folder.  Now when I decide to start all over with a new project and select "new document" I get a blank scene with one infinite plane and sky.  Except the sky is that of the last scene saved and plane is the old out-of-box mat.  Also all of the camera dots of the previous scene is still there.

Your advice is a help though.  I allows a quick way to reset the camera squared along the x,z axis which I prefer.

**I found a work-around.   It is probably common knowledge but I just figured out a way.
** Prepare your default scene as you desire and save any changed sky, mats, and camera settings with a dot set to save those settings to default.br6 in folder that Bryce launches from.

Now save that same scene to the folder where you normally keep and save your Bryce projects.  I named my scene AAA DEFAULT.  This name alphabetically puts the file in front of my other files and is easily identifiable.

From now on instead of selecting "filenew document" to start over,  I select "fileopen" and click the AAA default.  tah dah.

I'm slow to learn but maybe this will help someone else.

Resave the new file under a different name right away.
It is, at least for me, inevitable that I would at some point save over the pre-configured "AAA Default" file. Then have to remake that again.

Lol!  "save that same scene to the folder where you normally keep and save your Bryce projects."

Rofl!  Which one?  I've got so many now.

The AAA thingy file sounds like a good idea but I'd probably take forever retraining myself to use it instead of clicking on "New". (hangs head)

what about just making a backup of default.br6 and put it in a safe place and if you ever need to revert back.  Just copy the file back.

@ Analog-X   .....  it's not a problem to save or find default,  what Fran and I were perplexed about is you only get your default scene on start up, not when starting a new project from bryce already running.

@ Fran...      LOL,   I know the feeling.  But I've got all my project in on master folder and subgrouped within that.  My AAA default is in master folder  so it is easily found.

The other B6 bug that nags at me, is the hateful way all .obj files import to be a black hole in the screen - so much so that unless I want to use HDRIs or do some boolean modeling I just go back to using good ole B5.5c.  I wonder if they'll fix B6 before they bring out B7 - with a whole new set of bugs for us to discover...

Sorry, is my cynicism showing? (peers over shoulder)

That's my problem, too many projects! Lol!
