I appreciate any tips...and let me know if you need a screen capture of my render settings. My main setting is quality at 2000.

Did you use the same FR settings for both? This may not be the answer, but the "shiny fractal" probably needed a FR of 0.8 or 1 to avoid jaggies along the edges, whereas that might have been too high for the problem fractal. Worth a try?
