I want to render in preview mode , but annoyingly hair is like this. Any way around this?

Also is it possible to make 1 light pass with OpenGL inorder to stop hair being see-through

Nope.  That's the way it is in Preview because the hair is made up of one sided polys.

Why render in Preview mode anyhow?  It's so low res it's useless except for previewing.

You can reverse the normals of the offending polys, using the grouping tool, but this will make them invisible from behind.
