Subject: Poser 7 - Better to have one Runtime or Multiples?

barrowlass ( ) posted Mon, 12 November 2007 at 8:42 AM · edited Sun, 17 November 2024 at 7:57 PM

Well, I'm feeling my way around P7 once more.  Slowly (very slowly), locating my stuff - mercifully stored on disk.  Now, am I better just having everything in the main Poser 7 Runtime or creating separate ones.  With P5/6 I always had separate V3/M3/Aiko - whatever ones.  P7 seems somewhat different - to me anyway.  I like it, and I think, so far, that it handles memory issues a lot better than the previous flavours, but that's a matter of personal opinion.

Any advice, opinions etc., gladly welcomed - and don't chuck Posettes at me - please!

I would say you are better creating separate runtimes, makes finding stuff so much easier Sheila. I also try and keep my runtimes to around 4GB each as this makes it easier to back them up to disk, which also helps if you have to re-install them (you don't have to go through every single item 1 by 1).

Thanks Steve - I think I'll stick to my tried and tested way of working as well - even though switching Runtimes is a bit of a pain at times

It depends on who you ask.  TheFixer and I both go for single Runtimes.  Others prefer multiples.  There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

The advantages of having a single Runtime are:

No duplication of content.  This can happen accidentally if you don't keep very close track of what is where, when using multiples.  It can also be needed, since some versions of V3/M3/D3/S3 etc don't like to be far away from their native Runtime when injecting morphs.  The only way around this is to copy all the INJ/REM stuff into your other Runtimes.

You don't have to shuffle from one place to another and wait for a new Runtime to load when looking for things.

Subfolders are easy as pie to organize and can be set up to suit your characters/content/workflow in about 10 minutes.

Disadvantages:

Poser takes longer to load initially.

But it's still the same in regards to the library system: the bigger the library of the active runtime the longer it takes Poser to start. Same for switching to another runtime. The only change is that Poser 7's Content Collections increase the startup time, too.

Cheers, everyone - I suppose I'll just play around - until I 'break' P7 and have to do it all again! 😉

Please use more than one runtime for your own sanity...

I use both P6 and P7. I have many multiple runtimes on a separate external hard drive. This really saved my butt when my PC died and I had to wipe the drive. The external  was just fine.

I'm using single runtime myself. I've never seen a reason to make multiples since I systematically re-organise every install I ever make. Everything is still only few clicks away. I have a subfolder structure like this ("characters" library, for example): -organic -creatures -items -architecture -humans -sixus1 -... -poserworld -daz -v2 -v3 -v4 -m2 -s3 -d3 -m3 -futuristic -contemporary -historical -daz -poserworld -renderosity -rdna -... -rdna floppy hat Every item gets a nice own slot for them without a need for multiples. Works for me; runtime size around 50Gb now. The trick is to keep library folders small enough. If any subfolder grows to contain more than 50 items, I just split the library into subfolders - there is bound to be logical sub-groups for that many items anyway. For me the Poser startup time is the only negative effect, but then again the usual Poser session for me takes about 3-5 hours so having the application launching for 5 minutes doesn't really bother me at all.

Hmm... sadly this forum software ate away my indenting of the structure and I can't seem to edit the post anymore either. Oh well.

Thanks folks - it's interesting to know how different people approach runtime organisation.  I have an external HD and was planning to have my various runtimes on that - and also back them up to DVD as the need arises.  Belt 'n' braces girl, that's me!
