Subject: Caustics Tutorial

FranOnTheEdge ( ) posted Sun, 16 December 2007 at 7:23 PM · edited Wed, 22 January 2025 at 4:44 PM

I just posted a new tutorial on a method for using as well as creating caustics for Bryce lights.

The tutorial should soon be available in the tutorials section.

There is also a companion file to go with the tutorial which contains the Bryce Lights with caustics attached ready - in *.obp, plus a rock with flattened area for use with the tutorial as well as two ready made images with a pattern for use either in the tutorial or on any other occasion.

If you can't wait for it all to appear the links are thus:

Glad it sounds useful to you - if you have any problems do let me know as it's hard to tell what's simple enough or too simple when creating these tutorials.

indeed...I'm working on one for TG2TP and it's even harder when there's new or divergent technology involved.. ...

I used to use Terragen, but that was before TG2, and I got bored with nice empty landscapes... Bryce was always more fun.

Maybe things have changed with TG2, dunno.

What is your tut going to be about?

Attached Link: Tutorial Render

Making a road with displacement using image maps to drive the displacement, something the new terragen has the old never did and placing objects in the scene using image map masks..it's in my public file locker for folks to beta test before I finalize and .pdf it. Check out my gallery[see link] to see what you can now do it. TG2 is the main reason I'm having such a hard time re learning Bryce,TG2 does so much of what I always wished it would when I initially bought Bryce instead of getting the registered Terragen.

Hmmm, the path is impressive, and I like the nearest tree, but that distant one is rather disturbing.

If that path is what TG2 can now do I'll be interested to see this tut when it's finished.

It's one of it's many new abilities...the bare trees were just sorta placed on a whim as it's another thing TG2 can do..import objects...the patches of grass are the same thing but were placed using an image map mask, an ability also new to TG2. It will likely appear in the tutorials section here t Renderosity so I'll post about it,. There are plenty of images in my recent gallery uploads exploring it's abilities and I do tend to ramble on in my comment under each image. heh heh heh, if you're interested further.. ...

Terragen can now import objects???  I didn't know that.

I used to be troubled with odd gaps in landscapes in Terragen, only there when rendering, does that still happen, or has that been fixed?

You should dl and play with it Fran...it's a whole new species of terragen...you'll be both confused and amazed but the planetside forum is chock a block full of help and tips. And yes the free version is still free but limited in quality[i/3 anti alias of the full version, no animation, sigh and some other stuff I think] of out put and render size[800x800].. ...

Well I did actually download it about a couple of months ago, but it looked even more complex that the previous version - and that took some fighting just to get land and water in there and to render it

Once I'd done that I couldn't get any further with it.  There just didn't seem to be much more I could do with it other than changing the angle of the sun, changing the muddiness of the water, and the texture of the land.  So I'm afraid I... kind of got bored with it.

You really have to do some reading I found, before you start to get results but the info under documentation at planetside forum is quite helpful and some is in easy to follow tutorial style that seems to [well it did for me] illuminate a bunch of new ish workflows that aren't obvious.. ...
