Another example of my being a dollar short and a day late...... I just got home from a bonsai trip along the Eastern Sierras, had my camera, saw some "would be" wonderful lighting for monochrome, but alas I didn't really stop to take many pics, a few on the way home, trying to get a good elk shot, and then I get on here and see this is our new challenge! Oh well, I will have all month to try to get some great B&W, cuz you know how I love B&W!!!!
Thanks to whoever came up with this months theme....... and Happy New Year!!!

Put that fork in your gallery Rich, it is great. Lots of good entries so far. Here is a link to my first:

It is three as far as i know.
Solo se puede poner tres, es para evitar crear un "thread" muy largo y para que todos piensan en lo que capturan en sus fotos.

I have a strange feeling here...
this is called a challenge, but there is not challenge page (and hence no written rules, and hence the above questions...)
this is a challenge and I understand and agree that it is for fun (--> no votes) but there are also almost no comments... :-(
So, I understand why Kort is uploading his entry in his gallery... but I would like to encourage people to express their opinion, totally frankly, because we are here to learn, to improve...
So, I start giving my opinion on the already submitted pictures :
I really wish that others will give their opinions and advices...

Some days ago (before the start of the Forum challenge) I uploaded a B&W picture in my gallery (see link) hoping that the people I'm considering as THE masters of B&W (cixiidae, ges, olivier158) would make a comment and give me some advices... But, as I noted already before, B&W pictures generate less comments... :~)So, I'm now uploading a similar image here, asking for your true opinion...

Tus fotos de Barcelona geniales y gracias por la dedicatoria amigo
I think I understand most of it but not enough to translate it for the other viewers here

My third entry (follow the link to my gallery) :"In Life, as in Photography, things look much

hello friend forgives that do not make comments in the forums but my English is pesimo and translators translate in want, Te explain what the SYNERGY is a war of water and 25529 to be held in summer in some villages of Valencia and Alicante, bad in this war is that the camara suffers much because one only has eyes to make pictures but do not know what you are going to find your back, good if you want to know something but not hesitate to ask a hug Jeroni your friend. Your pictures of Barcelona gene.
No se si esta bien escrito

I don't really think it is. After all, how much of a basis has B/W phtography been for anyone here? Sure, black and white has been the start of photography, but how much has it really been the basis of what the guys and gals around here do? If it has been, it has been a choice, but not a necessity, as it has been been when photography was really at its "basics". These days black-and-white photos are an artistic choice, not a "basic" - or so I would think. What the basics of photgraphy are can be defined from a historical POV, but will that really do the craft justice? Like most things photgraphy evolves, so should we really cling to the roots of it, or embrace the opportunities modern technology provides and make them our own? Nevertheless, this challenge got me thinking and I figured if I shot a B/W image I might as well shoot an image of a blackbird:

Thanks sister ! What you've explained to Jeroni would help me too because I did'nt know about the timing to valid an edit !

You are trying to use BBCode, whereas most of the post formatting seems to beased on HTML (as far as I can tell, being not very fluent in HTML). Gave me quite a headache too, for a while. What I do these days is save coding that works in a text file, replace parts of it when I want to post a new image, then copy-paste the whole block into my post. Might be a bit of a roundabout way to handle it, but probably doesn't take much longer than typing all the tags would.
Sorry I haven't had a chance to comment on any of the great stuff everyone has been posting to this one.
There is some really stand out material here...Gimi is correct about the nature of the forum challenges..
These are more informal and Iwe really do encourage you to interact with the other photographers and talk about what you posted or they posted, or different ideas or techniques..
jeroni's shot is my favorite so far...
Andreas, my point was, B&W is the basics of Photography..Sure a lot of people started in the color world, I'd be willing to bet quite a few here started in the digital world.
It's like asking (for example) Eddie Van Halen to play a set on an accoustic Guitar., or or asking "Will I Am" to record a Bluegrass band with one microphone on a single take. (Ok, that's a really obscure reference)
But it makes a point, It's an exercise in the basics..It's also a good way to explore and learn about the way light and dark work together

Agree with you Pushinfaders about the basic and great shool of B&W !
Not agree with your example Eddie Van Halen : he did a live stage exhib' with an acoustic solo for about 10 minutes...lol ! Maybe Joe Satriani or Dave Gilmour could suite better, but I am not sure as each guitar man (woman) began with acoustic ...
And as I understand the meaning of your comparison, I'd rather say : acoustic is at the guitar player what B&W is at the photographer...
But like Michel ( GiMi53) I hadn't some in my files, now which could perhaps challenge
A nice sunday to all of you my friends

This should be a fun challenge.
There are a few "rules" this time around
No tinting..that means no sepia, no added tone at all
It is prefered that you actually shoot your photo in monochrome, rather than converting it from color.
Today almost every camera will allow you to do this..
It's kind of a back to the basics challenge.
So there ya go..have fun exploring the simple yet exciting world of black and white photography
