Subject: Building a new PC..

theconqueror ( ) posted Thu, 06 March 2008 at 2:36 AM · edited Sat, 30 November 2024 at 9:57 PM

I want to build a new PC for myself...(slowly, not in a hurry)
But I have some questions...

  1. I'm planning to use Win XP Pro 64 bit........will POSER 7 works with this OS without problem and will the V4 and the V4 caracters etc. work without problem..?
  2. I'm planning to put 8GB of ram.....can poser use all the memory during rendering or is it limited....?
  3. I'm planning to have 2 ea of Quad core CPU (Intel or AMD)...can Poser 7 use all 8 cores...?
  4. I'm planning to put 2 SLI Nvidia 8800  512MB or 768 MB graphic card...is it OK....?
  5. Excuse me of my english, and if everything is ok I will begin to buy piece by piece..

I'm sorry may be these questions are sooo technical...if I can get an answer I'll be happy...

Thanks
F. Diner

  1. Yes
  2. It will use a max of 4GB
  3. It barely even uses all 4 cores. You wont see a huge difference with 8.
  4. Waste of money, poser cant use SLI.

Also this has been asked a couple of time before so try searching for it to get more detailed suggestions.

A few things... some products are no longer including xp drivers... you'd be far wiser going with vist64 then xp64.

Sli is for people with too much money to burn. If you want faster gra[phics card speed, but one of those uber expensive cards, but for 3d work and most gaming, you can get a graphics card under $300 that will do you just fine. Odds are the second sli card might give you an additional 10% framerate increase... not really worth the invested cash. Check Tom's hardware guise (google it) for the best video card bang for the buck broken down by pricing.

And other programs (like Vue6 Infinite) will love you for the extra ram.

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

One of the renderosity members ran into a major problem with SLI: you can't use multiple monitors. In short - save yourself the money and the hassle.

As for WinXP64 and Poser 7: runs fine and fast, no trouble at all. Poser will use no more than 4 cores, and that only in the main rendering phase (after shadow map calculations and object/texture loading). If your scenes are computationally heavy (complex raytraced reflections, blurred raytraced shadows), 4 cores will have a significant impact on render time vs. 2 cores. More than 4 cores is not needed.

Poser 7 will not use more than 4 GB of address space.

More than 4 cores only means that other processes will not be slowed down by Poser. You will not see any difference in render times for Poser itself.

I just built myself a new system:

  • Abit A9Pro mainboard (€ 79) with Intel P965 chipset, 2x GB Lan, 10 (!) SATA ports, 2x FireWire, 10x USB, 3 RAID controllers
  • Intel Q6600 Kentsfield quad CPU  (€ 219), not overclocked, so running at 2.4 Ghz
  • 4x2GB GEIL DDR2-800 (€ 150)
  • Zalman HE600 PSU (€ 85)
  • nVidia 8800GT graphics card with 512 MB RAM (€ 199)
  • 2x Samsung SpinPoint 500 GB SATA II drives (€ 170)
  • Optiarc DVD +/- RW dual layer (€ 20)
  • floppy drive (€ 10)
and an older system case that I still had lying around (about € 30 when I bought it).
Total: around € 960. And blazingly fast.
Caveat: the Abit mainboard comes with an outdated BIOS, you have to flash it right away before even trying to install an OS.

For Poser 7 and Vue 6 Infinite, this machine ROCKS.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

It is good to note that although Poser won't use more than 4 cores, other rendering apps may - check documentation for each.
