Subject: Reflective, rippling water...

FCLittle ( ) posted Fri, 11 April 2008 at 2:02 PM · edited Sun, 15 December 2024 at 7:40 AM

I've noticed some really wonderful water textures in pictures and was wondering how they were achieved.  The default liquid materials don't seem to match what I've seen here so does anyone have some advice on creating better water or know where I can find some.  I checked the freebies here and couldn't find any liquid materials.

I'm hoping for a rippled, reflective texture, clear enough to make out what is being reflected....

Thanks!

If you want good ripples and whatnot, don't forget that the underlying polys of what you place the water texture on (terrains etc) can drive some of those kind of effects, as well as the bump in the water texture....

Thelby has a great stream in his last gallery pic...

Use the Water Material in the Glasses section, not that in the Liquids section.

Thanks for the Compliment Monsoon. That was a Combination of 2 of Vue's Presets Severely tweaked and 1 of my Tropical Caustic water mats with a shallow depth. I didn't know it would work till I was mixing and matching and that is Exactly the thing to do Mix and Match  and/or you can purchase Monsoon's Water Pack

I would rather be Politically Incorrect,
Then have Politically Correct-Incorrectness!!!

My kit is mainly for oceans and shorelines. Forester is the master of clear and running waters, pools and waterfalls and such. Ron's is the source for postwork water effects....plenty of resources around. GillB has some very nice water mats and Dave Burdick has some infinite waters in free stuff....

As Thelby says, mix and match and tweak. Then mix, match and tweak some more. You'd be surprised at how different water becomes even with a gentle nudge of the slider from 'murky' to 'clear'.  But you don't even need to be gentle lol....presets are made for messin'!!

Thank you Mark :)

Those water mats I have at 3D Commune were made way back in 4 Esprit or Pro !!

Funny though, I have been creating some realistic good looking waters for some of my own renders recently - maybe I should expand on that, do some really killer ones and put a new set in store :-)

Also, the colour of your water will be influenced by whatever mat you have on your ground or terrain below it.  I find a lot of Vue waters are way too blue for realism (great for fairytale fantasy though)
