Subject: A couple of Apollo/AMUCFS Questions

USMale1960 ( ) posted Tue, 15 April 2008 at 8:28 PM · edited Tue, 10 December 2024 at 6:12 PM

I'm working with AMUCFS (thank you very much bagginsbill!) - is there an easy way to replace an image file (such as the Body Hair Map) in all of the nodes in one shot, or is find/replace on the pz3 in a text editor the best bet?

Also, does anyone know of a more hirsute Body Hair Map for Apollo?  I'm not looking for King Kong, but something more than what is there with the original.  I'm trying to create my own, but my lack of Photoshop skills keeps getting in the way.  Of course, I'd prefer free, but I would not be adverse to purchasing something.

Many thanks.

Are you using Poser 7 ? ( or Poser 6 )

Go into materials room.  At the top right hand corner of the pop-up, is an arrow you can click to produce a drop down menu.  You can select all materials for that one particular body part you have textured, and apply to all.

Using Poser 6 (sorry, should have mentioned that in the original post - and I'm new here and can't figure out how to edit my original post).

I've been playing with the Body Hair Map, and it's been challenging (and slow) to update all of the nodes that reference the file (i.e. switching from abh02a.jpg to abh02b.jpg).  I've resorted to saving the pz3 and using a text editor to do the find/replace then reloading the pz3 (but that's also slow).

Thanks.

Hi!

Have you read through all of the AMUCFS thread? There is an incredible amount of info there.

Fore example, look at page 4 within the AMUCFS thread.

Look for this picture:

Hairy enough? LOL?!?

Then scroll a little farther down.

You'll see me post a link to a script nruddock made for us that replaces images across all zones in a figure.

In case you can't find it, the script is here.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Next page:

jdredline did these - they're awesome!

Careful with that suggestion! People keep talking about this like it will help. Nobody wants the skin shader to be copied to EVERY material zone, - but that is exactly what will happen if you "apply to ALL". You'll get body hair on the eyeballs and teeth - yech.

The problem here is that you want to apply to a specific subset, which happens to be other materials that were the same until you edited one of them.

It is really stupid that Poser doesn't have a "shared" material concept. Then you could edit one copy and have it shared on other zones that you want to be the same.

Great suggested feature, BB!

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

nruddock's ReplaceOneMatAllMats python script should do what you need.  -jan-

Bagginsbill, I know I skimmed through that thread (which is how I found your incredible gift) and I now remember seeing those pictures.  I have pulled the script that nruddock made and will give that a try.  Thanks for the pointer.  I need to go back and read through the thread more closely this time.

Yes and no.  Most of the Apollo images I've seen (and created) look like he's been dipped in Nair (to quote a comment from someone in the referenced thread).  That's not really the look I'm after.  I want him to look more like me (I know, it's a God complex).  When I look in a mirror, I've got hair everywhere except the top of my head, the palms of my hands (don't even think of going there), and the soles of my feet.  My problem is that I have not yet been able to make Photoshop create a realistic (to me) image map for this.  Does anyone know if jdredline has shared any of the image maps he did (or were those the ones Anton provided)?

Another sort of related AMUCFS question:  I will admit I have not yet tried writing any Python scripts for Poser yet, but I have read (ok, skimmed) the Poser Python documentation.  Is there a reason you did not use the SetStartupScript function to automatically set up the Parmatic environment every time the scene loads?

Thanks.

SetStartupScript - doh. That was a complete miss on my part. What a good idea.

Have you tried it?

I've tried painting a body hair map with some success.  The problem is, it's very difficult to actually get the hairs to show up in a render without making them too thick.  One particular trick is you probably need to turn Minimum Shading Rate wayyyy down (like to .2 or smaller) or the texture is simply not sharp enough to show up well.

I have not tried it yet.  It will be the weekend before I get a chance (I hate it when work gets in the way of the important things in life).  If no one else has a chance to play with it before then, I will give it a try and report back here.

Thanks.

Interesting.  I did not think to try that.  Thank you.  If I am starting to understand things, that means that unless I'm doing a real close shot, that level of detail will not be that visible.

By the way, I like the background and lighting you used in that shot.  Would you be willing to share?

Thanks.

pjz99 ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2008 at 9:28 AM

The lighting can be obtained here:
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/rrfilelock/download.php?fileid=33527&key=8122

The background is DAZ cyclorama with a photo paper background:
http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/shop/itemdetails/-/?item=1015&_m=d (although frankly I need to quit using that and make some of my own)

You can get hairs to show up as Bagginsbill showed above, just a lot of care has to go into whatever hair map you produce.  If you look at practically any photograph at medium length or farther, usually you'll find it's very hard to see body hair unless it's VERY thick (like BB's beary fellow).
