in addition to geep's excellent advice, dimension3d has a script for poser toon settings, allowing easier use of poser's "toon render" wacro.

see att. img.  it has settings for simon, as well as several others. however, it can be applied generically.

Once you have your character set up, go to the material room, and hold down shift and click the 'Set Up Toon Render' Wacro button to toonify your character. That's what I did for the picture in the linked thread, is that the type of toon effect you are after? I did it in Poser 7, but it is also doable in Poser 6.

well I find you need a quick easy way if you are making lots of panels for a comic, and the easiest workflow for me (and looks good too) is shaderworks combined with olivier's art materials. Love esther

There is a whole section on cartoons in this thread:

For what few toons I've ever done, the built in Wacro has suited my needs just fine. I can only see buying other toon shaders if I were planning on marketing a comic strip on a regular basis. I'm just not that funny. :tt2:

the poser 7 toon render wacro is very good IMVHO.  one reason that it's very hard for
folks to learn how to ink comix is that inkers use a combination of  edge-falloff and scene
lighting techinques as they visualise the scene, hence it's non-intuitive for newbies.
fortunately, poser has an excellent edge-blend node that is fabulous for doing the ink
work IMVHO.  this can then be augmented by poser's own toon line function, if desired.

Teyon ( ) posted Tue, 10 June 2008 at 7:01 PM

I've never come across a toon render from Poser that emulates the changes in line weight you'd get with traditional (or digital) inking. If anyone has an image that's got an example of this I'd be pretty excited to see it and find out how it was done. I know a few comic book artists who have worked on titles like Spawn and Star Wars comics who have used Poser to help them complete their work but they usually have to take it beyond the render's ability to convery line weight inside a paint app, Illustrator or Manga Studio.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Tue, 10 June 2008 at 10:41 PM

maybe olivier (or somebody else at rdna) has done a poser toon shader that creates lines
of varying width, according to lite direction.  if not, it's only a matter of time IMVHO.

there is variableness with light and shadow I think.  I should have made the lines thicker to show it. Love esther

Idon't think I did any postwork in those last two pics, just straight shaderworks applcation of olivier's shader using his smooth shaders.

There's a huge difference between laughing at someone who's purposely funny and laughing at someone who thinks they're being serious. :tt2: And funny looking isn't the same thing as being funny either.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Wed, 11 June 2008 at 5:17 PM

esther, it's possible that teyon is talking about variation in line weight as in the attached img.
it's alot more extreme than what poser can do, without the proper edge-blend shader.

yes - that outline goes all the wy aroundthe figure, but the art material shadersdon't do that

Miss Nancy, that's it exactly. Variation in line width is essential to keeping an 2D illustrated comic interesting to look at. So it'd be pretty important to be able to mimic it if all you're using is Poser.  What would be even cooler would be to be able to apply specific colors for the lines around specific objects...sort of like what's being done in todays 2D and 2&1/2D cartoons.  Just idle rambling here. If that's a Poser render Miss Nancy, then I think it's close enough to what I was asking that I'd be satisfied with it (either way, it's neat). - it would also prove to me that I need to spend more time in the material room.

file_409425.jpg

ive found 90% of the textures i use for V4 come out almost black using the toon shader settings in poser.

ive found ONE texture in fact so far that looks amazing and "lit up" as it should... the others are VERY dark and totally different than what the texture should look like in general.

any idea why this is?

also- i assume Miss Nancy you tore into that image in photoshop correct?  poser can't get anywhere near that fidelity in a toon render, at least not that ive seen lol.  sure would be nice... but until it does i think the toon renders do pretty well.  its just odd that i can only use one texture set for V4

Darkworld ( ) posted Thu, 03 July 2008 at 4:55 PM

file_409426.jpg

this is what the Diva V4 texture looks like... its perfect!  but i'd rather not use that texture for 100% of my cartoon renders lol.  every other one i've tried so far comes out dark like above... all im doing is applying the MAT then holding shift for Toon Setup in both cases.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Thu, 03 July 2008 at 5:17 PM

yeah, dark, it's a P7 toon render with the lines drawn using APS path tool.
but it's just a matter of time before one of the node gods posts a guide on
how to use the poser edge_blend node to get some fabulous falloff shaders
in poser.  the toon shader function should work o.k. with ordinary textures,
provided they're plugged into the diffuse channel and there isn't alotta bling
or fastscatter or any of that fancy alternate diffuse stuff AFAIK.

Darkworld ( ) posted Thu, 03 July 2008 at 5:29 PM

hmm, well i dont have time to look at every node lol... i double click the MAT and if it renders trash i go to the next mat... so far i've tried over 50 and that is literally the only one that works!  im not sure why the wacro doesn't work out of the box.

I'm using Poser Pro.  maybe thats the problem

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Thu, 03 July 2008 at 6:38 PM

oops! check yer gamma on the other tex.  maybe ya need to jack 'em up to 2.2 or whatever.
there are several threads here on the gamma problem introduced by poser 7 pro.
in my case, that old render was just poser 7 with mac standard gamma.

Darkworld ( ) posted Thu, 03 July 2008 at 10:51 PM

i always have gamma turned off for renders so im not sure how that would affect it but ill tinker with it

estherau ( ) posted Sun, 06 July 2008 at 6:49 AM

Darkworld, the problem is you need the ambient colour to be white.  Then you should find all of the textures you want to use work.  The problem is transmapped clothes and hair etc are going to look bad and not work properly with your poser method I think.  I really think the easiest and nicest option is shaderworks combined with olivier's art materials found at rdna.

With olivier's method you can get that flat shaded look but also this look which was just a two step process using shaderworks. Love esther

ps I quite understand.  when making thousands of comic panels you don't want to be spending all day fiddling around
