Subject: Any ideas where to start for a good leather shader?

pauljs75 ( ) posted Tue, 24 June 2008 at 4:07 PM · edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 4:11 PM

I'm trying to figure out where to begin to make a halfway decent procedural leather shader. More or less the kind used to upholster seating and the such. I have been using the cardboard shader as a sort of cheesy cheat for more distant pictures, but I think having something better and more appropriate for closeup shots is due. Suggestions?

I just made one like that.  I just used a texture map I created in Paint Shop Pro and the Alien Skin Eye Candy plug in.  I will include a copy of it with this reply.  I actually made 2 different texture maps, one a simple leather pattern, the other with bands in it.  They are blue but you should be able to change it to any hue you wisg by adjusting the hue in PSP or PhotoShop.  The shader is simple.  Use a simple multi channel shader, use the texture map for the color channel.  adjust the highlight and shininess to the desired effect.  No Ttransparency or Translucency.  Give it about a value of 4-10 for reflection.  For the bump channel set it to Multiply under operators.  For the first source, use the same texture map.  For the second source, choose value 1-100 and set it between 10 and 20 depending on taste.  Its simple and it works.

I also would be interested in such a shader, and for the very same reasons. Anyone have some cherished leather shader recipes you'd like to share? ;-)

Here is the second leather texture.

This isn't strictly a leather texture.  I created this one as a quilted cloth panel to match the leather.  I will put it here in case you find it useful.

Thanks sparrownightmare. I'll try your "recipe" out tonight. Much appreciated.

No problem.  I had a question for you.  The old style house you use for your avatar, where did you find it, or did you model it?

Trying for something *procedural*, such as this... (Not that any image based textures are bad or anything, slightly different goal, that's all.)  Wondering if I can get it even better.

Right click to save and change .txt to .cbr on attached, should work.

Hi Pauljs75

Texture maps are nice but they do require some attention to the UV mapping. Procedurals are nice because you can avoid that . This is a procedural leather texture that I put together for an assignment some time back.

I don't know if this is the look that you have in mind but, being procedural, it's completely editable.

*Sparrownightmare- I box-modeled my avatar in Wings3D. It's based on the house in this photo by Phrankpower- [ http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1380211&member](http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1380211&member)

Here's my version in a Carrara render-

Both images look better if you click for larger image size.
Oooops! Sorry for the sidetracking.
*Bwtr- Thanks Brian, I forgot about them.
*Pauljs- Thanks for the shader.
*MarkBremmer- Wow! That looks exactly like well-worn leather. Any chance for a shader freebie, or at least a glimpse of your shader tree set-up. Thanks.

Yeah M.B., taking a look at that shader would be worthwhile...

Also wondering if my try at a procedural is along the right path. I seem to have the leather skin pattern to it ok by using the cellular pattern in bump & color, but haven't quite figured out how to get some of the occasional wrinkle patterns just right. Tried something using a marble pattern channel in there, but it doesn't quite do what I want.
