Subject: Poser Clothes to Oblivion Game

muf ( ) posted Mon, 28 July 2008 at 10:22 AM · edited Fri, 10 January 2025 at 11:28 AM

Hey guys how are you all!

I have been a member here for quite the years now so some of you know me, some of you dont.

My question is:
Are there any poser Clothing creators here that would be interested in having their works converted to an addon mod to the pc game Oblivion?

Basically what would happen as I understand it, the obj file would be imported into blender and made to fit a figure called Exnem which is a body replacer for the stock body that ships with the game. The textures for the clothing mite need reworked as well to be scaled to the smaller mesh, I am not sure.
It then gets converted to an Oblivion specific format which can be put into game either through a quest reward, or in a chest or any of  the many ways to get items in game.

If any of you fine authors would be interested in this please send me a site mail or reply to this thread and I'll have a look at your clothes and see if they fit in with the game.

You will receive full credit for creating the models and textures and anything else you may want such as a site link in the readme file etc.

Again, im not taking any ones stuff from Renderosity, I am asking if anyone would be interested.

http://teseyecandy.com/forum/index.php     is the forum for the body mods.
http://www.elderscrolls.com/home/home.php    is the official site for the game for you to check it out.

Thanks for your time, and please...no flames. I am just trying to spread out both communities.

that's neat
are you looking for conforming cloth or will it load it's own skeleton?  i have some dynamic cloth i can shoot over to you
always wanted to check out game modding too

go that way really fast.
if something gets in your way

I am not sure about dynamic. It has its own character model that the clothes would need to be scaled too. I am hoping to get some interest in this as the Oblivion community drools over the models for clothing over here.

Wouldn't most of the Poser stuff be too high poly count and need to be reduced? Or is that what they're doing in the conversion process?

Don't play oblivion much anymore (AoC kinda came along...) but it's a fun game.

Crazy alien chick FTW! (yeah....right....)

Hi Realm!
Yes, the models would need to be reduced for sure. That would be part of the dumbing down process of the model. Basically after it was converted to Oblivion, it would be unusable to any high res stuff anymore imho.

just rip off the clothing you want, thats what most elderscrolls modders do !!!! ;) I've seen many a poser outfit, body and hair converted illegally to  morrowind and oblivion....  is asking now a new trend for ES modders ???? ;)

muf ( ) posted Mon, 28 July 2008 at 7:40 PM

I am new to the Elder Scrolls modding world! I have heard that this has happened in the past. The site that I posted does not post illegal mods. The mods that I have seen on there have all been used with permission.
If that wasnt the case, I dont believe there would be a Renderosity wish list on their forum..there wouldnt be a need for one.
I have talked to some good modders there and none will use anything without permission from that particular site.

thefunkyone_4ever ( ) posted Mon, 28 July 2008 at 9:13 PM

i was only messing with you !!!! ;)

It is true that many modders have ripped off poser stuff... i myself am responsible for ending 2 body mods, who attempted to rip off victoria 3 and aiko 3 meshes..... :) in a past life i was a morrowind and oblivion modder, and possibly the most hated person with the bethesda devs and admins !!! :D (i have lost track of the amount of times i have been banned from the official elderscrolls forums :D)

i will say this, i wouldnt hold your breath on getting persmission from many of the people who sell stuff here, i doubt they will want derivitave copies of their works given away for free.... from what i have gathered from lurking here, the poser comunity is more protective of their works than the elderscrolls comunity..... but you never know you might get lucky..... techically it would be an interesting advertising feature for poser items......

you might well find you have problems with the UV mapping if you start decimating the mesh too which could cause you hassle with the normal textures for whatever it is.  If you are planning to re-uvmap and texture then you might be ok

I was falsey accused of "stealing" two poser meshes for MW once....it's actually why I quit modding for MW.   One of the meshes was not even close (a blind drunk monkey could tell that much), but I still got reported supposidly.  Another mesh was just a simple re-construction from scratch using a program that modelled it based off an image....and it was never distributed, nor would I have without contacting the person that made the inspiration and walking them through the process and asking what their feelings are on the accusation.  All I did was post a screenshot.

In the past for MW, I've seen daz hairs stolen, buildings stolen, and even complete mesh sets stolen.   For oblivion, I literally found 4 that I believe have been used off this site just yesterday, and when I pointed this out on the eye candy forum the topic was locked and it seemed to have been brushed off.

I think it's honorable that muf asked if it's alright, and is asking for the original author's involvement...because there really are some wonderful creations made for poser.

However, I agree with the funkyone  (whom I have not talked with online in forever....do you remember your dear Korana oh tower of power?) in regards to the fact that it is being done RAMPANTLY.  I've found a few recently, and I'm debating about what the best course of action is.

One one hand, it's quite obviously they are being redistributed freely, and only slightly modfied.  On the other hand, I do not have poser and cannot check the files to actually compare them so I cannot say that 100% that they are not just re-creations.  Most of these have been by one author.

It's easy enough for vendors to check and see if their creations have been stolen, go to:

http://www.tesnexus.com/

and search the oblivion mods.  If something looks suspicious you can download nifskope, which will open up the actual meshes:

http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/NifSkope

(7zip may be needed to extract the files)

and then you can check the textures by downloading a dds program, such as irfanview:

http://www.irfanview.com/

On one hand, I do believe that the modding communities should watch out for one another and try to avoid piracy issues....but on the other hand things get out of control and false accusations and reportings occur it's very stressful and upsetting....this I know first hand.  I literally had to hire a lawyer!

I go back to point this girl rambles alot

While it's a fantastic idea to ask for permission, and with some it might actually get the ball rolling to even THINK to ask instead of just use....I can see the bad side too.  People often do not read read-mes or adhere to usage restrictions.  They might recognize the poser content, and instead of reading to see if you asked for permission, they might assume they too can download content from other sites and freely distribute them as well.

AND I should point out that I have seen some original Morrowind meshes turned into poser meshes and sold, years after their original MW creation date.   Things go both ways I suppose.

Thanks for the kind words Korana.
I have been around this site for years and would never take someones work with out their permission.
I would not even know how myself. I was trying to be a third party to try to get some involvement legally with the wonderful artists here at Rendo.
I thought it was a great idea lol. It has unfortunately turned out to not be so.
I do understand that it probably has been ruined by the vast amount of people who have pirated the stuff.
Never hurts to ask though even though it has not gotten me very far lol.

Korana ( ) posted Fri, 19 September 2008 at 7:42 PM

If it would work out and people wouldn't take it for granted, it would be a wonderful mix between the two mediums.

I'm glass half empty today after finding that much possibly ripped material yesterday, so maybe it could work out.

If you're skilled to rig for the game engine, I don't see why you'd be too interested in converting Poser content into Oblivion - high polycount (hard to rig).  Reducing the poly count of a typical Poser clothing item, usually AT LEAST 10k polygons, down to something that would be very Oblivion friendly, and then trying to rig the resulting mess if you use some automated polygon reducer - imo that would be as painful as just modeling the stuff from scratch.  Get Blender, go to the Oblivion mod wiki, learn basic modeling and just do your own stuff.  None of the commercial vendors are going to be interested in giving you versions of their work for Oblivion mods.

It really isn't super obnoxiously hard.  Want to model a dress?  Read this thread:
