Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 11 12:18 am)
I used to yahoo, but they suck now. Meh.
My post here disappeared!
You only really need two "toes". One big toe with one joint and the other four toes with one joint in them. Then two ERCs in the foot. Grasp and spread. The 4toe could have a "ready to sprint" morph in case some figure is in the ready-set-go position. It's be simpler than rigging a bunch of individual toes. Besides, look at your own feet. The toes have 2 planes of bending. Big toes and the other toes. When they bend forward, they meet. when they bend up, they spread.
That would give an easy and more realistic toe/foot relationship. That would mean that the big toe would have to be named 'r-toe' or what ever poser needs to call it, and the other can be called"r-other toes' or 'r-4toes' or 'little toes' or 'little-piggies' or whatever!
Whatever they are, they might need to be hidden for boot and shoe wearing. No big deal when major figures have toe and foot hiding poses.

DPH: Not a bad idea. Setting up a site myself would actually be a good exercise, seeing as I get paid to do that kind of thing. On the other hand, it would be nice to have something up quick to use until then. So I think I'll go and check out Google Groups. Yahoo has never been my thing.
JOELGLAINE: What you're describing is pretty much the setup we have now. I agree that it's sufficient. Toes do not move independently, so why rig them that way? We need an additional morph to spread the toes, but that shouldn't be too hard.
I think one of the many next things I need to do is figure out a workflow for making morphs. I was considering getting 3D Coat for that because it's cheap, runs on Linux (via Wine), supports symmetric sculpting and seems to have pretty decent tools. Not to mention all the other neat things it can do. I've used ZBrush a bit back in 2005, but the interface is not really to my liking.
Something with dials to combine and animate morphs like Poser would be even better, but I guess that's beyond my reach (if such a beast actually exists). As usual, I'm starting to wonder why I don't just go ahead and write my own tool.

Quote - I think we need some kind of platform for developers, so that people can upload things to a central repository instead of having to email it around or host it all over the place. Why is there no Sourceforge for 3d content?
Again, this is easily accomplished via Google sites. Acadia has a Google account and I made her an administrator of my google site, so she can post her shader links there. Why she still posts them in the forum, I don't know, but it's just as trivial to edit a google site page as it is to write a forum post here. Plus you can change the attachments and embedded images on a google site page with simple button clicks. You don't have to edit HTML.

Hmm, not sure about this. You don't want a site with lots of administrators. Google Groups seems to have similar features and is probably better equipped for discussing things and sharing content.
What I'm going to do, I think, is create both a Google site and a Google group for Antonia and play around with them for a while to see which one to use for what. I imagine the site could be for such things as public downloads and promo images, and the group for sharing files and discussing technicalities between developers.
If that works well, we might add a group for Antonia users later on.
-- I'm not mad at you, just Westphalian.
In Posette, the five individual toes are controlled by five separate morphs, rather than bones. In P5 Judy, the toes are controlled by two bones, separate from the foot. One bone controls the big toe only, and the second bone bend all five toes together. Either method, morphs or bones, is equally effective, albeit, I think that the morph system is simpler and more time efficient.

Thanks for the tip! For starters, I was thinking about a private group just for developers, though. I'm not even sure I want a general Antonia group at a separate forum. 'rosity and similar sites seem to be more than appropriate for discussions on Poser figures.

**odf--**Nice to know I'm in the groove with the toes. I use Blacksmith 2.2. It has a simple interface and is very easy to use. Like anything, it takes practice and experience to use well. You can take a look at the cr2 I sent you and see what I can do with that tool.
BEWARE of lots of free groups. The Porn spammers are like gangs wandering the internet, looking for things to take over. That's why I don't yahoo any more. Damned spammers!

JOELGLAINE: I had a look at Blacksmith, too, but 3D Coat seems more powerful and was much more cooperative on my system. As I'm using Linux, I have to look at that kind of thing, too. With my crappy ATI card, some programs don't even run correctly on a virtual machine. 3D Coat runs perfectly under Wine, so I don't even have to start Windows for it.

Well, Good on ya, then! Just suggesting stuff if you haven't tried them. Lemme know what what you think of the morphs I did for you. I wasn't planning to do more, but she MORPHS SO WELL! Wow, a real pleasure to work on her!

I'd suggest that you make only one toe group at the tip of the foot, just like Posette, and then manipulate the individual toes by way of morphs. That way, when yo want to hide the toes for foot wear, all you have to do in uncheck the visability checkbox in the properties tab. No need for special poses or anything. Remeber KISS, there is virtue in simplicity.

JOELGLAINE: The morphs look great, but some of them are a bit cartoonish. It looks as if Antonia's brow ridges were made of rubber. Also, emoticons not withstanding, the corners of our mouths don't really move upward when we smile. I mean, they do a little, but that's because the whole mouth moves slightly upward.
I think we should start thinking about making an Antoonia character.
The blink and mouth open morphs will be very useful, though. They'll give me a chance to add some important features to the face rig, like the lids following the eye movement, and the lower jaw being controlled by the mouth morphs. Also, if that's okay with you, I can take your morphs as starting points and try to refine them a bit.
That book on facial animation I keep mentioning says that for some of the basic face morphs, it will take an experienced modeler/animator a full day to make just one of them well. So I guess if you did them all in 40 minutes, it's no shame if they're not perfect.
-- I'm not mad at you, just Westphalian.
I told you the brow-up down were messed up. I should have said cartoony. The Brows Raised, brow angry are my redux of the brow morph. I just gave you the whole thing. Also, they don't HAVE to be used at 1 To be effective.
BTW! I've been in contact with Digicalimero and he said, it was simple geometry switching to swap out the forms with different UV mapping! So having a figure that can do it all IS possible!

DPH: True. On the other hand, it's easy to add a control that will hide a bunch of body parts all at once. So I could very easily hide all the toe parts of both feet, or of each foot alone, no matter how they are rigged.
At the moment, we have two bones for the big toe and one for all the others. It seems like a good compromise. Not too complicated, but with some nice flexibility for the big toe. The thing is, we'll probably need a whole bunch of JCMs to make the toecap follow the movements of the big toe correctly. So replacing bones + morphs with just morphs seems like an alternative we should at least think about.
Okay, time for bed. Tomorrow is an exciting day.
-- I'm not mad at you, just Westphalian.
Quote - Also, they don't HAVE to be used at 1 To be effective.
True that! To be fair, every morph will look messed up when it's used with too high a value. But I'd normally expect them to be designed so that they look good at 1.
I hope I haven't offended you. I remember now that you mentioned the brow up/down being messed up.

Good luck and Good fortune shine on you tomorrow!

Good luck and break a leg tonite, odf....... :D
As for the feet, what has been postulated is valid =only= if the figure stays in shoes or sandals. The whole 'two toes are all you need' is otherwise known as the infamous Poser Shovel Foot. It works fine if you only walk straight ahead, wear sandals, etc. It utterly blows if the figure is really throwing its virtual weight around, is moving over uneven surfaces, or doing pretty much anything that introduces vectors in a rotational or angular manner. It isn't a matter of being able to move your toes in consciously independant ways; the big toe is the force point and pivot of the foot, but the other toes -conform- to the surface for grip, added force, or balance. They spread and grip in relation to forces applied from the muscles and the exterior surfaces. If morphs can do it, cool....but so far, the morph jobs I've seen create too much deformation of the digits. Boning can get to be a real pita to keyframe, but if you could ERC the more common motions to the rig, it might do just fine.
Congrats odf and here's to many years of bliss. Hope you will bring us many little odf's in the years to come.

That sounds excellent. Is it possible to restrict certain content to, say, all contributors or even a certain group of contributors? The idea was to make it easy for us to share our work and get feedback before things are ready for the general public.

Interesting points. I guess my strategy would be to try morphs first, and if that doesn't work, think about a more complex rig.
I think maybe the thing to do for now is establish a set of controls for posing the toes. These should live on the foot actors and include such things as 'Toes grasp', 'Toes up', 'Toes spread', 'Big toe grasp', 'Big toe up', 'Big toe spread' and maybe one or two more that I'm forgetting right now. If people use these controls for posing, they should continue working even if we decide to change the rig later on.

I've created an African head morph for Antonia. For some reason, I was having problems using the .obj file and trying to sculpt, so I did this with Poser's own morph tool... which isn't my usual work flow, and I'm having some minor issues. I created a pz2 from the pmd, with this code:
{
version 7.2
{
number 1
}
injectPMDFileMorphs Zuloni.pmd
}
(Just shots in the dark, based on this tutorial.)
I get a warning message, "The file being read is not a valid Poser file." But I nonetheless get a parameter dial for the morph, and it works.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Try setting the "Version" number to 4 or 5 so it won't argue version with everyone else and make sure it IS a pose file extension. Beyond that, I'm clueless.

Thanks. The extension is .pz2, so that shouldn't be an issue.
Will give it a go later and see if I still get the warning. Kinda playing with a quickie texture to go with the morph.

I made an injection pose following the tutorial and IT DOES INJECT THE MORPHS! AND give me the "This is not a Valid Poser file!" I shut down poser and restarted. Same thing. From experimentation I conclude it has to do with the spacing. Alter the spacing of the gaps and ceases to work and flashes the same message!
Apparently the spacing is off by a space or two, and poser doesn't like it, but IT WORKS. Alter the spacing any, and poser gags on it, and it won't work at all.
If it work--DON'T FIX IT!
I tried the above, rjjack, but it didn't work at all, then.

It's supposed to read as:

Apparently Poser disagrees. I thought that, too, but this config works better than the original.
No, I don't know WHY, just that I produced an INJ for the first time in MY LIFE! NO pop-ups and works perfect.

Oh, I can alter it myself in Notepad, which is what I created it in to begin with. But I do know that the other working files I have seen have symmetry. My guess is that Poser is wanting a different order of nesting than the tutorial. I'll look at it again soon.
But I've working on the quickie texture for the time being (actually mostly I've been fiddling in the material room trying to get a colour tonality I like), and I've gotta get some shut-eye. It's not gonna be saleable quality, but it will hopefully be a renderable starting point.

This is a bodyshaping Mag.Set to give Antonia a younger appearing body. You can easily morph her clothes with it as well..Hope you'll like it.I just restarted poser and found my pose doesn't work at all now! It locks Poser up COMPLETELY. Arrrgh. I don't know what's going on.
I three fingered it off a couple of times and the pose is screwed even with rrjack's aid.
Edit: I got an Injection pose to work and it loads within 1.5 seconds on my machine. I took what I had and cut and pasted it over the number/version lines out of Antonia's zero pose and it works like a champ. I turned Poser off and the PC,too. It still works.
I'm not going to re-invent the wheel, this time. If it works this time, I'm not touching it again.
Poser is a tricky pile of legasy compiling, so I have NO clue what was going on.
The good news is, I have an INJ pose to inject all the Antonia Face morphs I have done so far!

Hi guys! Guess what, I'm a married man now. It was my favourite wedding of all times, too.
Got sufficiently drunk in the process and managed to disassemble my wedding band right before going to sleep. We got matching puzzle rings - bad idea, I tell you. But some good strong coffee that my beautiful wife made this morning restored my mental capacities, and I was able to fix our broken marriage ... symbol.
It's great to see so many new things for Antonia emerge.
Believable3D: coming along nicely. As someone who hasn't grown up among people of apparent African descent, I think that the dark skin tone might be a bit deceiving, though. If you render her with pale skin and she still looks African to someone like me, that's a winner.
-Timberwolf-: Her first magnet set! That's exciting. I might have a look at it tonight if there's not too much after-partying going on.
-- I'm not mad at you, just Westphalian.
Thanks, odf. The texture itself is considerably paler. I'll try to do a DAZ render for you without any shaders on it to see what you think.
I'll admit it's a quick morph, and I'm not used to the Poser morphing tool. I did have a better .obj morph in Argile, but try as a might, I can't get the geometry to match, no matter which way I've tried saving off UVs.
