Subject: about a tutorial video I just saw

Hi blender people. I just saw a video about making the planet mars, it was a simple primitive, and then it was textured by an image.

Is it possible to import a semi flat surface obj and do the same thing?

Of course something semi flat is a bit useless to try and  uv map and paint  on it, so I am just wondering it is possible.

What I have is a DEM map converted to an obj file. I was thinking maybe I could perhaps use Google Earth..take a snapshot of the same area then carefully fit it's image dimensions to overlay the object. Google Earth does have some nice textures :)

Thanks
