Subject: Constructive critizism

I dont really know where to post this.

Isent there any way of guiding people to constructive critisim. I know there are the option to have critic comments or not, but I think people need some clarification and a push in the right direction. Not sure how to accomplish this, but it's seems rediculus when people keep commenting eachothers work with "Nice picture!"
If one cannot find anything in the image that might be improoved one can at least motivate why one thinks the picture in question is nice.

Getting comments without motivation and critisism defenetly compells one to produce more pictures but dosent really do more than that.
Getting constructive critizism, even if one dosent agree, makes one look at things from another angle and grow as an artist.

Try the -> Critique Forum

People also need to learn how to take constructive critisism.

Most commenters in the gallery steer away from giving anything that might be construed as negative.

Yup, check the Critique Forum. Also, there are some excellent reading materials that KarenJ posted in the headers of that forum.

Ok, am I to understand then that the generall idea of renderosity comment function is not constructive critique/feedback but rather people just giving eachother a pat on the back with a smile and a comment like "Nice picture!" And that the only place people really give critique is in Critique Forum? It feels like such a shame as there obiously is so much activity here, I just think it is strange and a bit sad that people in generall are so "afraid" to give critisism when people post with the constructive critisism optioned. I would say 97% of all the comment I see is with style: I comment you and then you with a generall "Beutiful, nice!"

Sorry if I sound so negative, I just really like Renderosity and think it would be more interesting if people could actually analyze farther than a generall "nice picture" comment.

I will check out the Critique forum again and look around :D

No, that's not what they're saying...lol. What they ARE saying is that people's feelings get hurt very quickly so therefore MOST people just give general "Nice image" and all that from experience of the backlashes...lol. People CAN give contructive criticism in a comment if they so choose - I personally appreciate it on my images. No one knows how imperfect my things are than me! lol. When I allow comments that's what I encourage. Sadly, not everyone does. Some DO need a pat on the back and only that and take it the wrong way when you point something out that may be wrong, however tactfully :o(.

I think we need to understand that everyone posting is doing something they are proud of and most would like to hear how to be better but a comment needs to be balanced. Suggest what could be done but acknowledge the effort and ability that was put into it at the same time. That way the person feels like continuing to try harder. And sometimes, a comment may only say Nice Shot or Great Image because the person commenting doesn't have the technical skill to make a suggestion and likes what they see.  Not everyone is giving "hugs" with benign comments. They're also learning and don't have anything else to offer. I do know there are some who only comment to get comments but I really don't believe that is the majority.

What MrsLubner and LaurieA said...always take the effort of the artist into the equation when offering a crtique and you won't go wrong.. ...

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
