Subject: Texture problem in DAZ

Mavrosh ( ) posted Thu, 17 September 2009 at 8:22 AM · edited Wed, 06 November 2024 at 1:11 PM

Hello everybody! :-)

I have created my own high res skin textures (4000x4000) for M4, well basically what I did so far is using a resource texture and adding little things here and there like for example a tattoo. It looks perfectly fine in photoshop and when I save it as a jpeg andf upload it on my character in DAZ, the quality looks horrible all the sudden. The tattoo (very good quality resource as well, not too many details but for sure no low resolution) looks like it is made out of pixels. I find this very frustrating as I do not want to continue working on the skin as long as I did not solve this problem. Is there anything I need to pay attention to? The skin is saved as a jpeg with 100% quality.

I wonder if the brush you are using is a high res brush or a low res? You use Gimp, if I remember correctly?

If you use a low res brush for your tattoo-it won't matter the resolution in which the texture itself was saved as; the painted on tat will look blotchy and pixelish if it was low res to begin with.

Maybe post a picture here on Rendo as a WIP of the render with the pixelish detail so everyone could see it and perhaps comment.  There are SO many talented artists here, Mav, that you may get something that I or anyone else that comments in the forums didn't think of?

Grin!

Mavrosh, are you looking at the render, or the Preview?  The 3Delight render will look leaps and bounds clearer than the OpenGL preview.

And you can improve the quality of the preview, if your machine will take it, in Edit>preferences>Interface with the OpenGL Textures slider

Thank you everybody!
I am looking at the render actually... It looks horrible... maybe Darwin is right and it is the tattoo, that it is still too low resolution although it al ready is pretty high... Looks like I am gonna paint the tat by hand then, damnit... :-)

Try a search in DA for brushes, if you want to save some time, Mav.  There are some high quality, high res brushes that are up for freebies for Gimp-just in case there is something there you can use?

Usually, though, the best tats are the ones we make ourselves. ;)  Call me old-fashioned?

Or...desperately needing a wacom.  XD!!  I have to stick to brushes for now!

Mavrosh ( ) posted Thu, 17 September 2009 at 12:58 PM

Oh, a wacom is great, I have one and I love it... ;-)

Btw - I used a high res brush now for testing purposes, it jas around 2000pixels which is not too bad for a texture with a res of 4000x4000 pixels... The result in the render looks like tha... I am lost.

First off...I'm freakin' jealous-I wanna tablet!

Second...SIGH I am banned from photoshop from work.  I'll have to see if I can get online from home later tonight-I know that won't help you NOW, but hopefully I can get a few ideas for you for tomorrow.  I know the time differences is major between where you are and where I am. XD

Hopefully, someone who can see what you posted can help until then?

I'm sorry, Mav!!

Ahhh, don´t be sorry, please! I will find out and I am in no hurry! :-)

RHaseltine ( ) posted Thu, 17 September 2009 at 4:11 PM

Was the tattoo still on a separate layer when you saved as jpg? If so, what do you get if you collapse the image down to a single layer in Photoshop?

Mavrosh ( ) posted Fri, 18 September 2009 at 3:42 AM

Yes, it still were two layers when I converted it as it merges automatically. But I am gonna give it a try and  merge them before manually and then convert and see what happens.

DarwinsMishap ( ) posted Fri, 18 September 2009 at 4:14 AM

When you merge the two, it doesn't make a difference when.  Automatically or flattening-it ends up the same.  I've tried it, and there wasn't a difference in rendering the final product.

Did you get a chance to check the size of your brush that you used?  XD!

Mavrosh ( ) posted Fri, 18 September 2009 at 4:52 AM

The brush has a size of 1500x1000 pixels, something like that, so not really small. :-)

DarwinsMishap ( ) posted Fri, 18 September 2009 at 6:20 AM

Hm.  Well, crap.  Let me look something up quick, and get back to you.

DarwinsMishap ( ) posted Fri, 18 September 2009 at 6:21 AM

Okay-I'm switching to DDU so I can ask you a few questions!

DarwinsMishap ( ) posted Fri, 18 September 2009 at 6:29 AM

Okay-I have a question about this pixelation problem.

When you go into your brushes, do you use the shortcut key or choose the actual brush from the drop down menu?  In Photoshop it is the ctrl B to bring up the brush sets.

I ask because when you use that shortcut key option, Photoshop automatically brings up your brushes in the "Pencil" selection rather than the "Brush" selection.  When you use brushes in the "Pencil" option-your brushes will come out pixelated like you have shown us in the WIP you posted.

Check your brush- If it's in the Pencil option, simply switch to the Brush instead and try to remake and re-render the tattoo to see if that fixes it.

Sometimes, it's a simple shortcut key that can really mess with you.  It does me. ;)🤣

Oh-I'll post this ...well..everywhere you have the question at just to help you out in not having to hunt down a hint?
