The fur on my furred creatures is not treated kindly in Poser 8. Anyone have any tips & tricks to fix this?

cspear ( ) posted Mon, 07 December 2009 at 8:00 AM

Is the P8 render with or without IDL?

White and very light materials will benefit from having their diffuse values reduced from 1.0 to something like 0.8, and definitely not higher than 1.0.

Thanks for your reply but it is another issue and I found another post by Little_dargon where it's solved.

Finally understood what Little_dargon was talking about. Yes, I'm aware of that I'm not that smart.
Set the texture filtering to none. Doh...

wow! It renders much better in Poser 8!  👍

Wow, great fur!

Do you style Poser human hair as well?
I can't quite seem to get the hang of the Hair room, but dynamic is rendering much faster now in P8 and I'm starting to use it more often.

 Thanks carodan. :)

I do get involved now and then with human hair but am not pleased with the results so I haven't finished anything besides eyebrows and such.

I'm glad to hear that my little misadventure in troubleshooting was of some help to you.

It renders faster, at any rate.  Which is always a good thing.

Dumb question time: Set which "texture filtering" where?

I'm guessing it's a setting on nodes somewhere in the Material room?

Here is a pic of where to change it. 😄

Thanks. Does it need changing on every material, or just particular ones?

I'm working with the furred cat, who shows the same grey hairs.

Fur already has "None" selected on its image map. This is the one I'd have expected to need to change, but it seems it doesn't. All the other image maps are set to "Quality", but they only seem to relate to particular body parts...

Yes, unfortunately every hair group need to be changed.
But there is hope!
I am redoing all my furred creatures so all who have bought them will get the update.
I will post info or send emails which ever works and tell everyone. It'll still take a few days since I'm very busy at the moment. Sorry about that.

Sorry, but just setting texture filtering to "None" is not enough to get the proper "Poser 7 or earlier" furred look back in Poser 8.

Look at the tail:
With the original settings(right),  you can still see the underlying mesh.
With my new "Poser 8" settings the fur will hide the mesh again like it should.

The solution is easy, but a bit tiresome:
Set hair width to "2" and "8" instead of "1" and "1.2" for every hair prop. (Some bodyparts have several hair props so use the "props" list to find them all)
Then resafe the modified figure.

To create other breeds, open the modified cr2 with a text editor and switch the texture map.
Then resafe again.

As I said, a bit tiresome, but on the upside, Poser 8 renders dynamic hair A LOT faster than any other version of Poser.

One more to show the difference between "fuzz" and "fur". Look at the tip of the tail and the back of the head to see that the actual mesh is now fully hidden.

Again, the original settings are totally fine with Poser 7 and earlier.
I first tried raising the hair count, too, but that showed almost no effect.
Only changing hair width (AND switching of texture filtering) brought back the real fur.

Tiny ( ) posted Wed, 09 December 2009 at 9:36 AM

 Thanks JoePublic for that solution!
I'll add that change in the fixed update files. 👍
Will tinker with it a bit more to find the ultimate settings.

Now I'm confused. The cat has a "Fur" material and a "Whiskers" material. I'm guessing I missed a whole bunch of material settings for the fur that aren't under the cat...

I think I might wait for your fix. Sounds like much the easiest (and safest) solution for me. ;)

I mentioned this in another thread yesterday - SVDL has a Python script that will let you adjust the texture filter settings on all materials at once.  I don't remember where I found it - either here or over at RDNA.

To make the changes to the hiar group settings, the CopyHairSettingsAll.py script in the linked thread can easily be modified to transfer (or modify) just a subset of the settings from one group to the rest.

JoePublic ( ) posted Wed, 09 December 2009 at 4:15 PM

Cool, thanks !
Those scripts are great help.

I wonder if it is possible to do a script that hides/unhides all dynamic fur (props) , so that a furred figure can be posed without preview slowness.

I tried to hide the props with a pose, but the dynamic hair itself was still visible. (And slowed the preview down)

Tiny ( ) posted Wed, 09 December 2009 at 4:28 PM

Yes, that is possible. On my Furred wCow I have "pose" settings to show and hide parts or all fur.

If I remember right, when one has several figures in the scene there was something about Poser will deal with the fur on the first one loaded. That may have changed I haven't checked.

Ah! I knew I'd got those CopyHairSettings scripts for something... Then I went away on holiday...

Any progress on an updated version of Furred Cat, Tiny?

Just got back from hols myself and am putting together the test version to send off to testers. Shouldn't be too long after that. First it'll be available for all that have bought the furred cat and dog packs. The rest of the animals will follow later.
