Subject: Vue6I and 64 bit system

Burpee ( ) posted Sat, 13 March 2010 at 5:11 PM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 4:59 PM

I am setting up my new computer, which is a 64 bit system. Vue is installing in Program Files. Shouldn't Vue6Infinite install into Program Files(x86)? Thanks

nruddock ( ) posted Sat, 13 March 2010 at 5:25 PM

There is no "magic" in which of "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" a program gets installed in, it's merely a convention.

Generally avoiding using either of them (and a pathname with spaces in) increases the likelihood of avoiding problems with UAC etc. (especially when the program is pre-Vista and is known to write to it's own directory tree).

melikia ( ) posted Sat, 13 March 2010 at 5:58 PM

Burpee - it actually doesnt matter where it installs, the two directories are actually supposed to help YOU keep track of which are 64-bit capable, and which are not.  Program Files(x86) are actually 32 bit programs, and the normal Program Files one is for 64bit programs.  As said before, it DOESNT matter which place you put it, your computer knows what it is. =D

And thanks, Nruddock - now i know why some programs seem to ignore even the "Program Files" directory LOL.  I've gone on many a search for "lost" programs....

Thanks both.  This is a new experience for me.

V6I will not work so I have to redownload from e-on software and see if that will fix my problem.   I have  beta, upgrade to that and upgrade to that and upgrade to that.   Customer service told me to try the version I copied to disc and if it didn't work to redownload it from the site.  That is what I have to do.

The new computer is 64 bit and very fiew programs are 64 bit yet.    I'm a  computer novice so this is all Greek to me (sorry to Greek speaking peoples...just means I don't understand).  I can replace a graphics card but software issues leave me stumped.

I'm in the same boat - just moved to Windows 7 64 bits.  Lots of new things to learn.  I only installed Vue 7 and 8.   I'm still in the middle of sorting through my content and see how and where I want to organize it.

I'll try to dig out my copy of Vue 6 and install that one too.   Don't forget to right-click on the exe and select Run as Administrator.

There is also a compatibility setting for older programs.

To change compatibility settings manually for a program, right-click the program icon, click Properties, and then click the Compatibility tab.

Hi Peggy, nice to see you. I am thinking that my problem lies in the fact that I started with Vue6Esprit and then did a side upgrade. I may need to install Vue6Esprit first. Do you think this may be the case? It says I'm missing files when I try to run V6I Edit-actually started with V5Esprit with a free upgrade to V6Esprit and then a side upgrade to V6Infinite.

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Sun, 14 March 2010 at 1:57 PM

No, you should not have to install other versions to make V6I work.  At worst it asks for the old serial numbers, but that should be all that's needed.

What files are Vue listing as missing?

I don't think it said. What I was trying to use was the 'final release Vue6Infinite' and 'Vue6I final release update' discs I made. I knew I had a problem when the update would not finish installing. I tried to open V6I and it said files were missing. Don't remember a 'details' button, just the message. I see that I uninstalled Vue so I'm just going to redownload it and see if it works. Thanks Peggy

Oh, this is frustrating.  I went to the link to get the downloader.  I clicked to run it and it says a link to the site could not be made.  I'm going to have to call customer service tomorrow.

I'm still digging through my pile of backup disks.  My labeling for CDs is not so hot.  "Cool Vue stuff" or "stuff I bought" is not very descriptive!

Have you tried the tipp from Peggy, to run the downloader or the install-exe by rightclicking first on those exe-files and choose "..run as administrator..." ?

I'm running a 64bit system Win Vista and now Win 7 since over three years, i've barely never ran into problems with all those programs i run and tested - about 97 % of them working, the rest not working weren't important ones.
And Vue never gave me a problem since then.
I myself started with Vue 5 Esprit at the end of 2005 and since then i've got all the sidegrades up to Vue 8 Infinite.
All installations were working fine, just being asked about the serial key of the version before and then it installed without a problem.

The only problem i ran into about two times while downloading the install files (with different installers, maybe like with Vue 5 and Vue 7), that those download files were corrupted and i had to repeat the downloads. But that could be caused by loosing the i-connection for a moment while downloading.

Burpee ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2010 at 12:10 PM

Oh, I didn't understand to run as administrator before I used the exe.  I thought she meant after it was installed.  Thanks.

I have contacted tech support already and they reset my downloads.  I'm grabbing them now so I'll just use the new, fresh downloads.  The downloads I have on disc are Vue and an upgrade to it.  Hopefully these new downloads are just the Vue complete ap.  I'll also try Peggy's tip BEFORE I install :)

I have had no problems with other softwares.  Everything, except for Chips Challenge :), has worked perfectly and installed without a hitch.

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2010 at 3:08 PM

You need to right-click the setup.exe to install and also right-click on the Vue  6 Infinite.exe to run Vue the first time.  Both are important!  If you forget the second one, you end up in a loop with the activation keeps asking for the ACT code.

I'm going to pull my hair out...I swear it.

I installed Poser6 yesterday on the new machine and started it up.  I rearrange my desktop icons.

Today I boot the new computer and my icons are all lined up again along the left side.

I then try to reinstall Vue6Inf with the CD copy I have using Peggy's tricks (because I still can't get a link to the server at e-on even though I was told it was reset) and it seemed to work.  It wanted my Vue6esprit ssn, then it wanted my Vue5esprit serial no. then it wanted me to locate where Vue5esprit was installed (it's not on this computer) for some kind of link to installed content and then it claimed that I had rejection by my firewall to settings for Vue.  I was totally confused but I thought i got through it and Vue started up.  I closed it.

When I tried to start Poser6, the folder was empty.  I try to start Vue.  it's folder is empty.

I had to reinstall both and started them both up.  They work but my Vue has watermarks all over it.  I have to get the ACTivation number manually or get a router or switch the DSL to the new computer.  I'm scared to do it since it's acting strange.

I just hope when I boot the new one again that Vue and Poser are still installed and my desktop icons are still where I left them.

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Mon, 15 March 2010 at 9:41 PM

Wow - that sounds bad.  Are you sure the folders were empty or were you looking at one of the libraries?  I still have not gotten use to them.   For now, I am not using them and just making folders like in XP.  I like Windows 7, but it does take some getting use to.

Hi Peggy, I'm very sure.  Hexagon, Bryce and my anitvirus also uninstalled and went to empty folders.  They said 'empty' when I opened them because the shortcuts could not locate the programs anymore.

The antivirus was working before I installed Vue6I again, because it keeps telling me it needs to update but because I'm not on the internet with my new computer I can't update yet.  After I installed Vue6I I tried opening all my shortcuts and some were empty.

I've decided not to get a router and just move the DSL to the new computer.  I have to get with HP and see what's going on and I don't know how to do that.  I'm hoping a link on the computer will take me there on the net.  Want to figure out this computer before its warranty period is up.

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2010 at 1:57 PM

Sounds like you need to call HP to get the computer in for repair.  Hope you get good help with their support.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Thanks Peggy.  I just talked to Lee in customer service at e-on about my ticket I have going with her.  My computer will not let me redownload V6I.  I get an error message.  She says the link works fine for her.  I am switching my DSL over to the new computer tomorrow and will try to download from there. Will also contact HP support about the uninstalled programs and see if they can figure it out.  I just want to get a copy of Vue to disc then I'll breathe easier.

Burpee ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2010 at 7:16 PM

good news, I turned off ZoneAlarm and was able to redownloaded the full V6I ap.

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2010 at 9:29 PM

I have ZoneAlarm too - just the trial now.  Not sure I will be keeping it.  My cookies keep getting deleated.  I'm not sure if it is Windows 7 or ZoneAlarm doing that.

More than likely its ZoneAlarm deleting the cookies.  I finally stopped using it on my last computer and refused to put it on this one, because it ended up being more of a hassle.  I use firefox, and i have it set so I have to accept cookies (very few places do I allow an "opened pack of cookies" lol) - annoying on some sites, cus I end up clicking accept about a thousand times before I can see the page, but I can also restrict certain cookies (i.e. any that say they are advertisements)... the other day, I went somewhere, and between firefox and AVG, I was saved from a malicious cookie with a trojan in it.  BAD cookie, no milk for you!

Also, check your browser settings, it could be dumping the cookies (or certain ones) when you close the browser.

Been watching this... how's it going, Burpee... any luck with getting the program to run on the new machine?

Hi, I was so distraught by my W7 machine dumping my programs that I never even booted it yesterday.  Today I was going to finally hook it to DSL but it's already 1:30pm and I have to go to my art league meeting tonight and do some chores.  Tomorrow for sure.

I want to have the whole day to troubleshoot it and hook it to DSL   I don't like to stop in the middle of problems if I encounter one so I plan for lots of time.  My brain has a hard time picking up where I left off :)

I did manage to get the copy that I had on CD from years ago to install but the upgrade with it will not install.  Lee from e-on gave me an activation code for it but I want to install the version I just downloaded yesterday.  I'll need a new activation code for it (gets rid of the watermarks).  Going to do that install now.

Burpee ( ) posted Wed, 17 March 2010 at 3:43 PM

I just spent some time reinstalling Bryce and Hexagon and then tested all the program shortcuts to make sure everything worked and my DazStudio 2.3 made me reinput the serial number.  I had already reinstalled Poser and it seems to work fine.

I uninstalled Vue and reinstalled it using the new download from  yesterday and got it activated.  Keeping my fingers that it stays installed.

Weird though, the Freecell, spidersolitaire, etc. that comes with the Windows7 is uninstalled.  It is no longer working.  Anyone know what folder these are suppose to be in?
