Subject: Newbie: Should I Use Low Res Models? PC Question

musikman ( ) posted Sun, 04 April 2010 at 10:19 AM · edited Mon, 27 January 2025 at 12:59 PM

Hi,

I just got PoserPro2010 today. I've never used it before. I've read through a post where Arcadia has supplied an excellent essay for newbies, and have copied it for reference, thanks Arcadia, much appreciated!

My question is my PC, and whether or not I should use any of the !Daz "low res" models instead of the regular V3/V4 M3/M4. Not the fastest computer in the world, I have a Pentium 4, with 2.8Ghz processor, 2.5GB Ram, ATI Radeon Sapphire 3800 series vid card with 500MB Ram. My reason for purchasing Poser is to do animations using audio/lipsync, etc....for my animation team. My primary function on the team is composing music tracks & sound effects, but I'm going to also be required to sync the dialogue to any characters we use in any animations. Based on my PC specs, do you think I'll be ok with the regular models, or should I download the low-res just in case?

Thanks!

Musikman

The older models are great for background figures..  Dave Hoadley here has remaps for some to use V3 textures.

Dont forget about the Poser Legacy content available from SM as well:

Thanks WandW, much appreciate the link & advice. :-)

I'm sure I have much to learn, gotta start somewhere!

Your computer should handle any of the models OK. You begin to worry when there are 4 or more models in the same scene.  I run Poser 7 on an athlon 2.08 ghz processor with 512 mb of memory.

Victoria 3 Reduced Resolution is very useful. The character is free at Daz, and she doesn't need any morph pack. You can still get lots of V3 textures for her, and the Aiko 3 and Stephanie 3 textures work as well. There is also a Michael 3 Reduced Resolution, and the David and Hiro 3 textures work on him as well.

Markschum, good to know my PC's not going to choke up! From what I've heard, some of these models carry a high poly count, and adding animation puts more of a toll on the cpu usage.

Thanks for the info Nanette, that's cool that V3 reduced res doesn't need a separate morph pack,  I assume that means all the same (or similar) morphs that V4 uses are included in the V3 reduced res base model, right?

Hopefully gonna be installing the program tomorrow. From what I've read it seems important to install these Daz models correctly, so that everything goes into the correct folders. I've got "power loaders" , "presets", all kinds of good stuff! :-) We'll see how it goes!  Much appreciate the replies.

Musikman, V4 has almost no morphs to start with, you have to buy them. The Morphs++ pack has more morphs than V3 reduced resolution, but at a cost. V4 with morphs loaded is rather resource-hungry, and you will notice it if you have more than one or two figures in the scene. I don't own the Elite morphs for V4, but I imagine that will have a similar effect. It depends how much detail you want. For most purposes, the built-in morphs for V3RR are quite adequate. She allows you to play around spending no money.

V2 and V2LoRes also have built-in morphs, but I am having difficulty finding skins for them.

I have the Daz models downloaded, and they're in a folder on my external HD. Anyone have a quick step by step on how to open and install those to the proper poser folders, or does the exe file automatically send them to the right folders?  There are four exe files for M4, ....dpcM4 base, dsM4base, also a "power loader" and "presets" .....probably a simple procedure, but I'm just a bit confused as to how to load all four. (V4 also has three exe files)

V3 & M3 each have only one exe file.  Thanks, much appreciatet the help!

I use the low res versions of V3, M3, M2, Steph and V2 unless I'm doing something which needs a very detailed model.

Since they are all free now, there's no reason to not try them out, at least.

Just run the exe files.  They will slot into the right places.  The multiple ones likewise.  You can move the resulting folders afterwards if you want.  Don't move the INJ/REM folders for V3 or M3, though.  Most of the time, the INJ/REM poses won't work if they're moved.  Oh yeah, don't move folders out of their Runtime subfolders, either.  Unless you're creating another Runtime, that is.
