Subject: Is there a mass unzip program?

cujoe_da_man ( ) posted Sat, 10 April 2010 at 5:52 PM · edited Sun, 08 December 2024 at 8:08 AM

My search turned up nil.  Here's my dilema, after Poser 8 as failed me terribly, I'm going back to Poser 7, but the libraries I installed into 8 are not playing well with 7, so I am just going to reinstall them... for the 3rd !@#$ing time.

What I'm curious about is, does a program exist where I can show it a location of the zip files and it automatically unzips the files to the correct directory, kind of like a mass file renamer?  Winzip wizard only unzips to a location it wants, not the Poser directory like the zip files are supposed to be.

I'd like to be able to do this because I'm staring down 600+ zips, not including the almost 200 DAZ .exe files that took me two hours to do... cringes

I use 7zip a freebie which I got from filehippo.com.
I use multiple runtimes. If I have a few to go in the same runtime I select them all - right click - extract files - set destination and click okay. Everything else I leave at default and it unzips the lot to the required runtime merging folders as needed. No problems as yet and I've been using it a couple of years.

Ahudson's 3D Content Installer is capable of installing mass zips into Poser runtimes given that you manually point it into those directions.

Of course, there are limitations.  It will analyze each compressed file for proper library structure or else it will not install the content.  It will delete compressed files after installation unless specifically told not to.

Personally, I think you should rethink what content you should to reinstall.  I am sure that most of the files you load into Poser do not get used more than once or twice.  It is just a waste of hard drive resource.  But if you are hard pressed to let go, next time you upgrade, just add the previous version's runtime to current as an external runtime.  In that order, if you feel the need to go backwards, you won't need to reinstall content again.

Any program like 7-zip that has a command line version can do what you want.

The main thing is to be sure that all the zips you unpack really do have everything organised correctly and don't have files with the same name (variations on ReadMe and License or the usual problems) and while there are options to autorename rather than overwrite, you're still left with no way to connect the duplicates with the corresponding content.
Even if they do, it would still be better to unpack into a temporary directory rather than straight into the main Runtime..

Winrar can do it (& winzip too), highlight the files you want installed, right click & choose extract files, then a small window will appear giving you the option to choose the folder to extract them to.

surely you could get poser 8 working, or upgrade to poser pro 2010 and make that work - even better.
Did you try putting in all the service release patches?

Here's an off-the-top-o-me-head idea...
create a temporary directory (create it somewhere other than Runtime, but name it Runtime)
highlight all the files,
unzip....(I think)
Then copy the 'runtime'' folder to your real Runtime, then drop.

NOTE - this presumes that all your original zip files were created in such a way that they automatically install where they should really go...;)

or if you're really a fossil like me - pkunzip *.zip (although this doesn't always work)

That's what I do, just use unzip and highlight and drag and drop, they will create the runtime for you in the empty folder and all will be where it needs to be...that is..if the person zipped it correctly in the first place.  8^)
