Subject: How would you "modernize" Wonder Woman?

Well, they're giving Wonder Woman a new look and a new origin. Instead of asking whether people like it or not, I wondered, if you wanted to modernize WW, what would you do?

Here's a picture of Jim Lee's response, and a link to an article on the subject: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/30/books/30wonder.html?_r=1&8dpc

Well first thing I'd do is get rid of those passion killer knickers she wears... a nice skimpy pair will do nicely thank you very much..

I read about this yesterday, lol, and I am NOT a fan of the new digs.

I'd have given her some actual pants.  Not leggings, lol.
I'm not sure what those are on her feet, but I'd get rid of those.  And give her boots.
I'd get rid of the 90's era, Rogue from X-Men style shrug and given her a whole jacket.  Or gotten rid of it.

Everything else, I can deal with.  Those are just my peeves ;)

Wonder Woman is fundamentally about fetish gear.  The corset, the rope fetish, the heels - this new stuff is all trash, I dunno what DC is thinking.  They need to get back to their deviant freako roots.  She needs a nice modern c-string, tall heels (DUH), vinyl corset and a golden metal potato-masher bra with straps everywhere, not this stupid "jacket and pants" crap.  She's not Hillary Clinton, she TIES PEOPLE UP AND MAKES THEM TELL THE TRUTH!

I may be wrong, which I am sure you will point out :) but the point of wonder woman originally was that she was a strong independant woman.  Her original outfit was probably designed with that in mind.  Confident and Sexy for the time.

To modernise her would be to take what is the modern version of Confident and Sexy and modify it for her needs.

In which case we are probably talking Betty Page originally and maybe more Dita Von Tease now.  The new look I suspect has been toned down sexually to appeal to a wider audience.
I'm not averse to it, it's kinda meh really.  I think maybe a superhero version of Lara Croft would have been closer to the mark.

Still I have high hopes for the Storylines,  JM has been a favourite of mine since Babylon 5.

Didn't follow the comics, bit I watched the tv series when I was little, then got the dvds when they came out. I thought that the idea was, that she was hundreds (possibly a thousand?) years old, and that the women who lived on her island were the same.
The first series which I think was based more on the comic than the others was set during I think it was WW1? (that's World War, not Wonderwoman 1!). Her costume was a mixture ancient defensive jewellry (the tiara, the braclets and the lasso of truth) and the rest of the outfit made up of garmets that looked like the American flag (probably to distract Americans from the fact that the red star on the tiara looked suspiciously Soviet and also prevent "friendly fire"! )  ;)
The first series was the best, then came the Deirdre Barlow specs in the second, and the annoying little gold robot in the third. Some characters work best when you don't modernise them.
As someone already mentioned, the new costume looks like Rogue, and I think it looks a bit like Jubilee from the cartoon. Marvel wouldn't be too happy.
She's supposed to be Wonder Woman a DC Comics classic, not "Biker Chick from Marvel" and she seems to have ditched the flag, probably trying to appeal to a more international audience?
Keep her the way she was!

Next up! Captain America ditches costume for a Hawiian shirt, Detroit Tigers baseball cap and a moustache. Look out Magnum!

I'd modernize her in the same way I'd modernize Superman.  That's to say, not really very much.  A complete costume redesign always dates a character, unless they had a bad design to start with.  Look at Flash and Green Lantern, for example.

Superman's update is more subtle.  The blue is darker, the shorts are longer - more "traditional" than they were in the Silver age.  The cape is longer and the logo is bigger.

I really don't think there's a lot you could do to WW's costume without making a mess of it.  Take a look at some of the Elseworlds versions for confirmation.

Addendum...

Brings me on to one of my pet subjects; The Batman.  The character has always been my favourite of all the DC canon, yet I never liked the costume in the comic books.  Movie versions have always been better, IMO.

The Batman is one of the very few DC characters who doesn't have a style guide.  Artists are generally left to do their own thing wih the costume.  My preferred version would always be a dark grey or black body armour.   Preferably no logo, either.  I mean, bats don't fly around with a little picture of a bat on their chests, do they?

Ya know, I know there are tons of fans out there who are complaining that they want the old look back, but, honestly, I just don't like this new one.  And, honestly, I don't know whether or not to take offense to his statement that she shows too much skin...She's wearing a bathing suit, for all intents and purposes.  Granted, sexy isn't equal to the amount of skin showing, but, she's not showing a lot.  Cleavage, maybe?  But this...this is so much the polar opposite, it's almost "trying to hard to be feminist".  Points for trying, but, this is a little overboard, in my opinion.
Not to mention...it's supposed to be a "modernization".  Modernization means "Dresses kind of like they did in the 90's" now?  I'm of the opinion that no one should wear leggings, because they don't look good on anyone over the age of 8.  And, I'm all for shrug sweaters, but leather jackets are a no.
That said, he is an insanely good artist.  I just hope he revamps her a little bit more.  She's supposed to be a more "urban", hip chick.  i don't see anyone in my urban environment dressed like this

I'd shelve her and most of the other heroes.  Frankly having the same heroes for over half a century gets old.  Tell a story, let it end, and get on with a new character.

And pjz99 is right that part of wonder woman is fetish with a domination/submission theme (I think she loses her powers when her wrists are bound together or something).  Punk can be good, but not for her; if that character wasn't wonder woman I'd have no problem with it.

You have many superhumanly powerful people born of clay magically brought to life by the Greek gods who hangs out with a rdiculously powerful alien born on a destroyed word who passes for human, a billionaire with serious personal issues, another alien born on Mars, a guy who talks to fish, a guy with a magical ring given to him by immortal aliens who is part of an intergalactic police force, a woman who can shatter armour plate with her voice, and someone who uses arrows tipped with boxing gloves around where you are?

I suspect the DC universe version of "urban" might be a tad different than the environment we live in, what where having the city being threatened by technologically advanced gorillas wielding energy weapons and flying with jetpacks is an actual risk.

JenX ( ) posted Thu, 01 July 2010 at 4:56 PM

My opinion still stands.  This isn't modern fashion, unless, like I said, "modern" means "mid-90's".  I'm all about Jim Lee drawing his version of what he thinks Wonder Woman should look like....but, to me, she looks like Rogue without the red hair ;)

Keep the old costume and add Beyonce or Christina Hendricks - with lots of steel belted undergirding for the latter.

DCs attempts to update the look of certain characters has often met with complaints and/or laughter and snorts of derision.

Ever remember Superman with long hair and Clark Kent with a pony tail?

If they really want the "urban" look (that's a word I'm beginning to hate as the most over used of the decade), how about taking a stroll around Rotherham?  Fake designer sports shirt, stolen Nike running shoes, baseball cap and cheap ass hoodie.  Oh, and a can of beer.  :)

If they ever remade the tv series or a film:

Don't set it in modern day (war in Iraq etc, there enough stuff on tv and film abought them at the moment), during one of the World Wars is best. Retro is best. The way to modernise it would be to tell the story but using the technology available today.

Get the production team and special effects guys behind "Sparticus Blood: and Sand" to make it, so it gives it the comic book feel without without the "crappy" comic book style of Batmans Forever and Robin.

Possibly cast an unknown or less well know actress in the role. Eg someone who isn't going to use it to just get more publicity for themselves and rufuse to do any sequels/ demand huge pay rise then still turn in a "can't really be bothered performance".

Give it a rating of at least 15, so it it isn't too kiddie friendly, and for god's sake keep it away from Disney and Ang Lee!

I also like number 3 and the layout of the "flag" way better than the new look but personally I'd lose the long sleeves. She's an amazon, pretty fit, toned. I know she's getting on a bit, but I don't think she has any "bingo wings" to cover up yet! :)

In some ways they have already tried to modernize Wonder Woman. Jodi Picoult for example made her talk and think like a human being for the first time. Trouble is, that fans started screaming instantly and demanded that the character be restored.  Then with Gail Simone, Diana was more or less back to "normal".

I don't know how to modernize her though. I suppose I would make her openly lesbian and run with that.  Or make her the most powerful character  and see how the male counterparts deal with that.

D'oh! Why do things that happen to stupid people keep happening to me?
