did you by any chance hit the space or a comma or something while typing the name? Sounds like it might be an invalid character.

Get that invalid to see a doc, soon! ;)

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

Trekkie,

I have tried various combinations, e.g., space, no space, number, letter with and without spaces, etc. and sometimes it locks and sometimes not.

Very frustrating when it locks because the only way out (that I have found) is to use the Task Manager to "End the program" with any work that was being done, obviously, gets lost. Grrr :cursing:

Geep... can you let me know the exact steps, figure, and name you are using?  I want to try to duplicate it. I can not so far (you can have spaces and some other characters... and the error pops up if you use an incorrect Character, but clicking okay should take you back to the last version.

Rats,

I will try to see what combo causes this problem.
Clicking "OK" just brings up the "This character combination ..." again and again and again, ad nauseum ...
... and I have not found any way out of this "dead-end" situation.
(other than to  use the Task Manager to  "End ...")

Try deleting your Preferences.... that may be the issue.

12x8 Fwall_1 appears to cause the "lockup" reliably
Removing the space, e.g., "12x8Fwall_1" still causes lockup.
Removing the "x", e.g., "128Fwall_1" still causes lockup.
(Note - The "Intenal name:" appears to have been changed to "_2" <==== ???)

Changing the "Name:" to "_2" or "_3" or "_4" appears to NOT cause lockup.

"128Fwall" causes lockup

"Fwall" does NOT cause lockup

"1" causes lockup

"poly box_1" No lockup

" poly box_1" (with leading space in name) causes lockup

Try using a number or space as the leading character in the "Name:" to duplicate the problem ???

Yes? ... No? ... Maybe ???????????????

Ever seen this?

First time I have seen it in Poser 8.

Clicking "OK" cleared it and I was able to continue.

May or may-not be related to original problem.

That last one looks like what you would get if the firewall is blocking the library.

Did you actually search for something or was it just as Poser started? Have you made any changes to your computer? Windows updated itself?  (I just got a stack of updates for both my regular computer  with Vista, and my netbook which is using WinXP...)

Probably unrelated. The library is asking CP what the search parameters are so it can populate the CP Search tab with various choices. It's not important and doesn't impact anything if it fails, other than you can't search CP.

It could happen if CP is down, or because the firewall is blocking the query.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Trekkie,
No, no changes were made to anything.
This error happened in less than a minute between starting Poser, having a "lockup", aborting,(using Task Manager), and then restarting Poser ...  again.

BB,
Ok, thanks. 😄

Okay.. I tried space in front... no issue (error, but clicking OK reverted it) I wonder if it is content specific. Can you try this with Andy in a new scene? Also, what are all the props and Content in the Scene named... could be a factor.

If you would, take this out of the Forums as well, contact Support (Attn John) so I can some other details on this issue and your system. We can keep posting on the topic, but I do need some other details and then I can also share it with some of the Project Team.

I also experienced lockups or PP2010 "freezing" but maybe unrelated to Geep's experience.

It happens when I use some Python scripts as 'Texture Filtering Off' and I use at the same time the VLC media player. No commando was taken, I had to restart PP2010 and to turn off the VLC player, then everything worked fine.

But the weird thing is I had similar problems with some Python scripts in PP2010 prior to using the SR1, then Poser crashed sometimes when I clicked an unchecked box.

Since Geep's problem with the 'Hierarchy' uses a similar popup window like the Python scripts I use, maybe something is not communicating well somewhere.

ratscloset ( ) posted Thu, 05 August 2010 at 11:29 PM

Geeps issue is not really a freeze, it is just hung. It appears to have to do with the specific prop and maybe how it was constructed and saved.

Your issue sounds more like a display freeze. Try switching to SreeD and see if it continues (NOTE: I am speaking about the crash when checking or unchecking a box, not the conflict with the VLC Player. If you could, contact Support about the Player Conflict.)
