I was playing around with BB's fog shader earlier and I ended up with a really cool effect.  I'm not ready to post the image, but I was working on a modification of the shader so you can add it to various materials in case you want the effect of creeping frost as I like to call it without adding fog.

It's sort of a WIP but I wanted to show it to you guys anyways in case anyone else wants to play around with it.

Oooh neat! With a change of colour this may work for mould or lichen as well

Here's my attempt at lichen.  It's a little too bright (had to multiply the shader by .25) and still a little too see-through.  Lichen should hide the features a little IMO because it won't grow on a surface smoothly.

Actually, you could use this as a tarnish.

Winterclaw ( ) posted Fri, 13 August 2010 at 2:34 PM

Yeah you could, but you'd need to consider removing the P coordinate and probably working in AO so it tarnishes more in tight areas.

Tarnish.. is that when copper gets green? because this looks a lot like that :) I like the effect!

Ajax made a slime shader that is great for putting slime or mould on things. It's in his free shader pack that AFAIK is still available in Free Stuff. Although it's a few years old (made for Poser 5) it's still great. And perhaps you can get some ideas from it to incorporate in this one :) Just an idea of course. This is already great!

If you turned it black you could add it to silver items as well for the same effect as on bronze.

Okay, this new version is about as far as I've gotten.  I basically tripled up on the number of nodes so I can have more layers to work with.   I've got a picture with the older version in my gallery [ here](http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2097035) if you are interested.  It's not that great and not quite what I wanted but it kinda works.

Here's a pic with some color and I plugged color math into the displacement map and bump map.

Thanks trekkie.  :)

Thanks.  Hopefully I'll get an opportunity to examine sometime soon.

One little note, for the people playing around with this, the math function with -4 and 64 controls the bottom and the top of the frost.

**Cloud material**

I was playing around with this earlier and realized that this could be used to make procedural clouds.  With a lot of trial and error I came up with this.  Still needs tweaking and it was based off of the first creeping frost shader (the simpler one) so it needs updating as well.  Still just wanted to post it as well.

Here's the mat file of the WIP clouds.  Math functions 4 and 9 control the height.

I wonder if this will work properly on a sky dome.

If it doesn't and you don't mind playing with the numbers (a lot) you can try this atmospheric version.  Sorry but I can't get a top on the clouds right.  :(

Oh a ward of warning, some of the clouds look flat if they are up close... poser renders them as simple slivers with this shader.  Also I can't give the undersides good coloration atm... they should be getting darker underneath but they aren't.

Right now I'm just thankful that I was able to get this far today so I hope you all don't mind the flaws.  These are still WIPs.

BTW, here is the mist/atmospheric effect that first caused me to try and create the frost shader.  I wanted something that would be able to match this without having to use atmosphere.

The original version of this image is in my gallery if you are interested.

I have this wonderful prop that was made a couple of years ago called the Depth Cube. It seems that whoever created it has disappeared now. There were going to be updates to it and I think he wanted to create a version to sell in the market place. I wonder if this cloud shader will work on it. I'll have to try it. Thanks so much!
