Hm interesting, I didn't realize there's an update for that version (my favorite to). I currently don't have it installed hereon this XP machine, I guess can install the 5.5 and ad the update to see how to verify what changed. Where's the update, at Daz3d.com under Support or on download.com ?

File name exactly? My disc says Bryce version 5.5. I kept a file called Bryce 5.5 update at one time so I assume I thought I might need it again if I had to re-install Bryce 5.5.
And.......here I am a long time later re-installing things and when I "installed" the update I couldn't tell if it worked or not. Like I said I am having compatibilty problems with Win7.
Guess I will just try to create something and see if I can tell what might be missing. (if anything)
Maybe under Help/About or something similar there's an indication whether it's 5.5 or 5.5c that's running at this time? That's how most programs do it.
Or if you look at the change log of what's changed with the update (sometimes it's in a readme file), if may show a special new feature that you can find confirmed in a menu item or something similar.
Under Help on the program it says 5.5. I am pretty sure the update didn't work. I don't know what the update is under at DAZ......I got it a LONG time ago. :-) This is what it says:
br_ap001_cUP-99 on the file I had saved to disc. It was running fine on my XP SP2, but when the compatibilty trouble shooter on Win7 runs for this, it says it has made it so by making it okay with XP SP2......but it won't work. :-( So am wondering what I am missing in the program if I don't have the update. Jeez, I am beginning to think I hate Win7.....having nothing but trouble trying to get things to work. Sigh. This too shall pass. LOL
I got Bryce 6/etc. and didn't like it....crashed all the time for me. So I went back to using 5.5. Then I got Bryce 7........crashes even more than Bryce 6 did. So I really want 5.5 to work fine for me.
BTW, thanks for all the replies. Makes me feel not so alone out here. LOL
One of the things with win7 is that it tries to prevent applications (especially malware) from messing with where programs are installed, such as creating new files in the installation folders, new subfolders, etc... if UAC is enabled. That's actually a good thing. The problem is that many applications don't try to make the separation between application and user data, or at least used to not do that distinction in earlier versions. For example, when applying the 4.1 update to PD Pro 4.0, it would appear to install fine, and actually did, but then when trying to run, it wanted to create a new subfolder named Temp which was a new feature in 4.1. (to store cached undo frames in animations, amongst other things). Problem is that UAC would prevent it, and the program didn't test whether the Temp folder was created ok, and later the program crashed. The trick is to either manually create the Temp folder in the PD Pro installation folder, in this cxase, or better yet to run the program as Admninistrator just once, so that it could ignore the UAC impact.
That said, perhaps you have the same issue with the Bryce patch. If you install it as Administrator, or also run it as Administrator once, it might be better off thereafter.
another trick:
Are you using a 32-bit version of win7? If you're running the 64-bit version of win7 but using the 32-bit installer of Bryce (dunno if there's a 64-bit version for 5.5), you may need to be specific as to where to install it. You could try to install it in
C:Program Files(x86)....
but even in the 'Documents' folder. There you own all files going in.
I don't recommend disabling UAC. It defeats the purpose of having a safer Windows system.
I'm using Bryce 5.5 on Win 7 64 bit and it runs just fine. I downloaded the 5.5c from CNET here:
http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=Bryce&searchtype=downloads
As Staigermanus says make sure it installs in the C:Program Files(x86) folder since Bryce is 32 bit. If you're still having problems with it you can open the Program Compatibility troubleshooter by right-clicking the program's icon or shortcut and then clicking Troubleshoot compatibility.
thanks everyone.....I did run the compatibility troubleshooter on the update....and it didn't make it work. As far as I know, cause I haven't actually used it yet, the program itself is okay.
Using 64 bit....but did not watch where it installed. And no, I won't disable anything. I barely know how to turn this thing on and off, so I don't mess with much else. LOL
Will go get the 5.5c and hope that will work.
Thanks again folks.
Well for me "br_ap001_cUP-99.exe" which changed Bryce 5.5 to 5.5c was the update - on XP... but now I come to look at my version of Bryce5.5 here on Win7 - it doesn't say it's 5.5c, it just says 5.5.
The version number is: 5.5.12.40.
So maybe I didn't install the update either?
Or Win7 didn't....
So... is version 5.5.12.40 Bryce 5.5c or just Bryce 5.5?
If it's just 5.5 - then can I install the "br_ap001_cUP-99.exe" update now?
And do I need to save the presets first? I know you do when installing initially, but does it apply to the 5.5c update??

5.5c installed DAZ|Studio 1.4.16.0 for me. But the actual Bryce version is still 5.5.

Weird request for info':
I am re-installing things on new computer. Since Bryce 5.5 is my favorite version I installed that. I remembered that there was a 5.5 update, and I have that on disc.....but when I tried to use that I am not sure it worked. (having compatibity problems with lots of things with Win7).
Can someone tell me how to check to see if I have what was on the update in my Bryce 5.5?
Thanks.
