I am having issues trying to create a good look for my character, i want her to have "normal" options and also fairy/fantasy options. I have the normal ones done fine but the fairy look is harder, I have a face tattoo but I cannot decide if it looks good. Opinions?

It is not  a bad idea, maybe it needs to integrate more with the face. Maybe eyeshadows that simulate the wing and not the whole bug, and the lines following the eyebrow.

The problem with using 2d with the illusion of 3d can some times , detract from the natural beauty of the modelling of the eyes.
The onlooker then flits between the 2d image and the 3d illusion of the eyes and shadow and in your case the butterfly.
I believe if you were to make the butterfly less dominant this would then stop the distraction and allow the viewer to look at the whole.
You would then achieve a more united image.

It's not really my kind of thing but it looks ok :) I personally would go for mystical patterns, then you could create an ambient map and make them glow a bit :) all fairy lie n stuff.  Maybe use some celtic knotwork brushes :).

I like that but how do you do ambient maps? Is there a tutorial somewhere or can someone just tell me how to do this?

I'd prefer a more subtle look for the tattoo.
Unless it is intended to be a partial exoskeleton - which might be an interesting idea as well.....

Yeah I don't like it either, I am just looking for ideas and help :(

My simple way would be to take the texture into photoshop and play with the layers.

Wow how did you do it?

kyhighlander59 ( ) posted Mon, 23 August 2010 at 6:40 AM

second one is very nice. first one was ok as well.  I think for a fairythe first one was a bit dark where fairies are more light, like the second one.

Well :) it's just like a specular map or a transparency map.  A black and white image plugged into the Ambient channel, where the map is white the ambient effect will show, where it is black it will not.  So once it is plugged into the the ambient color, increase the Ambient value and you will get a nice effect.

If you took your butterfly map and made everything except the butterfly Black, then make the butterfly white, you will have an image you can use for an ambient map.  Add an image nod, load in the image, plug into Ambient Colour, then make ambient value 1.  Job done, you can make teh ambient color any color you like, a pale blue or yellow is noce :)

PS Hope that makes sense.

The second looks great.

Seaview123 ( ) posted Mon, 23 August 2010 at 9:11 PM

I prefer the 2nd one. The first is nice, but whenever I see tattooing like that, I think about how they got it. It might look interesting to put tattoos on eyelids but the pain would be unbearable. It might look a little better if it were more centered on the face, but that's just my opinion. Nice work on both.

GreenEyedGirl ( ) posted Mon, 23 August 2010 at 9:30 PM

Hey probably a stupid question but something just occurred to me, can this ambient map thing work on eyes??

Acadia ( ) posted Mon, 23 August 2010 at 9:41 PM

The second one looks rather "generic" and there seem to be other products that have a similar look already out there.

The first one is nice, but there is something about the butterfly that I don't like.  Aside from it being way too large and looking like it's hovering in front of her face, I think the colours might be wrong.  Too dark/bold.  Maybe a less dense looking butterfly with more muted/pastel colours. Think along the lines of a pale rainbow of colours.

I like the subtle sparkles in the second one. Maybe incorporate some of that into the first one?

The second one is beautiful! Very other-worldly (in a good way, of course 😄 )

I've never tried the ambient maps myself (0ne more Poser trick to add to my "experiment list"!), but I would think that you could use them on eyes just like you would use any other sort of map. The only thing I can think of would be that the glow might interfere with some of the reflection. But then, if the eyes were glowing, you probably wouldn't need reflection in the first place!
