Subject: OT - Selling PoserPro 2010

Paul Francis ( ) posted Thu, 14 October 2010 at 12:16 PM · edited Thu, 26 December 2024 at 4:23 AM

Hi folks - a couple of questions!  I have two 'copies' as it were, of Poser Pro 2010, one of which I bought, and one of which I won in a competion at Smith Micro recently - both in fact exist as serial numbers/licences for downloaded versions.  I don't need both (the one I won has never been activated), and was thinking of selling one.  Does anyone know a) if the licence can be legally passed on in this fashion, and b) whether such a transaction would be acceptable via this forum?  I have Zbrush 4 which will be going the same way, and such a licence transfer is allowable with Pixologic, which got me thinking about my spare copy of Poser Pro 2010.

My self-build system - Vista 64 on a Kingston 240GB SSD, Asus P5Q Pro MB, Quad 6600 CPU, 8 Gb Geil Black Dragon Ram, CoolerMaster HAF932 full tower chassis, EVGA Geforce GTX 750Ti Superclocked 2 Gb, Coolermaster V8 CPU aircooler, Enermax 600W Modular PSU, 240Gb SSD, 2Tb HDD storage, 28" LCD monitor, and more red LEDs than a grown man really needs.....I built it in 2008 and can't afford a new one, yet.....!

My Software - Poser Pro 2012, Photoshop, Bryce 6 and Borderlands......"Catch a  r--i---d-----e-----!"

You use to be able to do it. I remember a few threads on it. You had to fill out a special form. Now IIIRC that was with eF or later. So You would be better off asking the actual company, SmithMicro that question.

Same here and I don't think you can sell that one, but if you can let me know, since I'm dying to get rid of it, I don't use it and I never will.

Paul, the copy I have of Poser 8 was actually won by someone else and I purchased from him because like you he already had a copy. As long as you have not activated the serial number you are not violating any copyright or transfer laws because it is still inactive. However if installed and activated and then transfered you would be violating such laws.

I hope this helps you out and if you still have it and wnat to part with it I would be willing to make a deal with you for it. If interested PM me and lets talk.

Roy

I got a response from SM - there are no licence transfers permitted on this download version; thanks for the replies, folks.  I guess I'll get the processor I need to get my spare PC up and running and have two copies to render with!

Sorry this is a bit of topic, but I find this very odd, why enter a competition if you already have the prize? Or did you not know what the prize was?

You would think that as long as you had not activated it there would be no problem with transfering it.

You know, at the price drop of parts right now. Specially in CPU's and GPU's, that's not a bad way to go. I myself just picked up a GTX 460 1gb for just under $200. And will be getting a 6core 1090T for $250 next week if they are still in stock to replace the old quad on my other machine.
Ram has just dropped again. Another 4 gigs for $80. I could not pass that up.
I have 2 quads and dual core that I use networked together for a mini rendering farm.

  1. Free exposure!
  2. I was looking forward to having a version of Poser Pro 2010 that came with a shiny box to grace my bookshelf; I'm a sucker for a shelf full of colourful boxes...it either didn't say, or I didn't look closely enough, that the prize was a download version!

I know - a bit of a contrast to Pixologic's  licensing system - I have my ZBrush 4 licence up on Ebay - Pixologic will transfer all rights to the buyer, including all future support and upgrades, despite the fact I've been using it for more than 7 years.  Now THAT'S a policy I can respect!

Sweet - a couple of years ago I had heart scare and spent some time off work; I spent the time building 5 PCs which I then stripped down; I could add a dual core processor to the bits I've got left and set up a render farm too.

That's what my extra PC's are. Handme down parts from when I build new. When I upgrade something, that part gets passed down to the next one and so on.

I'm a computer parts junkie. I don't throw that stuff away. It has come in handy many time.

I've contacted SM about selling Poser (various versions) also and according to the reply I did get, they don't allow the transfer of any version of poser they've released. Especially not downloaded versions (but boxed ones as well), since redistributing a downloaded software with a serial number over the internet is considered software piracy, according to SM. But even if you would burn it to disc and give it to some else, it's not allowed.

It's a shame, since I've got Poser 7 Pro, Poser 8 and Poser Pro 2010 and I'm not going to use them anymore and as far as SM is concerned, no one else will either. I've sold some of my other software (made sure the license allowed it) and now someone else is very happy with it. Apart from bought poser content, Poser is about the only piece of software I do own, that doesn't allow me to transfer the license to someone else.
