you will need to set the pivot point in the first frame when there are no keyframes for the object anywhere alse.
If you already have any keyframes where the pivot point is somewhere else it will move there in the frames coming afterwards.
Hope this helps.

I did it right when I imported the animation, before any keyframes... still seem to have the same issue

When I import an animation from poser I would like to reset the pivot point. I do this:
Select the object
Select the numeric tab (middle of the 3 tabs) at the top right of the interface
Select Pivot Position (lowest of the 5 panels)
Three little icons appear to the right - Turn the top one (show pivot) and second one (relative pivot) on
You should now be able to drag the pivot position in any of the views or enter a numeric position for it
The bottom of the 3 icons on the Pivot Position display resets it to the centre of the object.
but as soon as I move to the next frame the pivot point goes back to the default. I want to change the pivot point so I can center it on the object and it will remain there. It is terribly frustrating to animate when my pivot point is miles away from my object.
