Subject: Created a sword in Poser. How do I texture it?

Michaelab ( ) posted Wed, 05 January 2011 at 4:35 PM · edited Sun, 25 August 2024 at 4:10 AM

I created a basic sword in Poser 8 but now need to add textures I will create in Photoshop. How do I apply it to the sword? Is a map automatically created when I created the sword? Do I have to do something else, because I'll want specific imagery to go on specific places of the sword.

How do I go about doing this?

Export the sword to an object and map in a uv mapping program.

You created it, literally, in Poser 8? From primitives?

The primitives already have UV mapping, but you may want different mappings.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

You can do quite a bit with Poser primitives, like the 2 images here. But I only made these before I was pointed towards Wings 3D. WAY more possibilities :o).

Flat planes and boxes have basic square UV mapping, as do cylinders. Cones and toruses can be a bit tricky if you are just trying to put a simple texture on it.

Michaelab do you understand how UV mapping works?  If not, read the link and give it some thought, it's not as complicated as it sounds but you do need to be aware of how your textures are going to act when stuck onto your model.

Here's a great little video walkthrough of UV mapping, although I seriously recommend you drink a lot of coffee or maybe have some harder stimulant handy before viewing because OMG the delivery is dulllll.

look in the freestuff for UV Mapper. There is a free version there that will help you out a lot. Just play a bit and in about an hour you will have you sword textured. It is really pretty self explainatory. Just export your sword from wherever you made it as an obj file and you are good to go. There is a fourm here on UV mapping moderated by uvdan who IIRC is the author of UV Mapper.

Well... yawn.... :O

Just got through watching his video. Time for a nap But it was very enlightening. Thanks for the link. And thanks parkdalegardener, I'll look that over and give it a try.

Hello,

I am revisiting this topic but now when I click on the great little video walkthrough of UV mapping link it is not working.

Can someone point me this video or another tutorial on how to paint/texture my poser sword?
