in addition to the above (links don't work), I am interested to see if anybody knows how to use 3d apps to get the professional inking and coloring like in the ones that sean posts here and at DA.  my guess is that it's impossible, but maybe somebody knows something.

PostWorkShop does a lot of stuff.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Sat, 08 January 2011 at 4:03 PM

Your kinks need fixing.

The first looks hand drawn. The lines added. The single tone fill with darker shade airbrush for shadow and the white airbrushed for highlights.

So You could. Make your outlines using the vert pen/Paths tool. Fill it in and do the shadow/highlight airbrushings.

I also thought that Gimp could use PS filters. But also had edge detect, combined with other filters to give that effect. Using a duplicate layer set to gel/luminosity or what ever to get a toon look can also work. A combination of it all.

In a nutshell you cant do "Sean E's" type of image in a 3Drender program not even C4D Sketch&Toon( Which I have)
that stuff is Drawn& inked ,perhaps with Wacom pen/tablet in Photoshop but still "hand Drawn"

I've got some Illustrator tutorials from Lynda.com done by  Bert Monroy that shows how to do this in Illustrator, done very nicely too. You could do the same in Photoshop using the pen tool.

I've tried in the past to get a painted look from poser, this is my attempt at the 50's style pin up look on the skin http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2085742&user_id=371706&np&np  the download is free in my freebie section, be careful though as the side view tends to diminish the brows, (need to look at it again at somepoint)

Also I had a 'get tooned' pack out which was for poser and photoshop, you get this look http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2053537&user_id=371706&np&np in colour and this in bw http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1414584&user_id=371706&np&np   I'm thinking of releasing the pack in freebies (reduced down in size and a few bits taken out as it was a purchable pack in the past)

Tools:- Win10, Dell XPS8900, ZBrush, Marvelous Designer 11, Hex 2, PSP8. PSP 2019 Ultimate, DAZ Studio, Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, Filterforge 11, flowscape,  Classic UVMapper, and several headache tablets.

TheOwl ( ) posted Sun, 09 January 2011 at 12:23 PM

That will be great to release the toon pack. Very high quality and heart warming!

I just downloaded the pinup look thanks alot.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Sun, 09 January 2011 at 1:49 PM

I googled photoshop filters and found tons of them. Which also led to cartooning tutorials. Not one was the look your looking for.

Me, I would import the image into animeStudio or Toonboom to ink because of the inking line controls and fill there then move to a paint app and finish the air brushing there. I tend to use more than one software for everything I do. That would give that hand drawn look. Which BTW is a good way for me as I still can't draw my way out of a wet paper bag with a sharp pencil.

So try the paths pen, fill, airbrush. Edge detect on a duplicate can help with your inking. Trace over what you want with path tool combined with erasing what you don't want.

Or change the style of toon and go the way others are showing or what you normally see done with DS, Poser, other rendering software.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Sun, 09 January 2011 at 5:08 PM

the basic linework can be generated by the poser edge-blend node plugged into the ambient channel, then augmented in APS with the pen tool and paths.  poser itself can do dramatic shading and coloring, almost as good as a pro artist, but the differences are easy to spot.  if it's a pro colorist with 10 yrs experience, no need for poser shading, but anybody still learning how to draw or paint should leave the shading to poser IMVHO.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Sun, 09 January 2011 at 5:18 PM

Still, using poser to shade does nothing to get you the look that RorrKonn was looking for as posted in original post.

As someone who does not draw very well, I disagree with leaving the shading to poser. I do quite fine without using poser.

It really does depend on what style you are going for as to what software can and can't do. I still have not seen any filter or poser toon render that does the first post style.

with baroody's tutorial in prev. msg., is possible to use poser fall-off shader for both lines and color.  clean-up/modify in APS for desired shading fx.

Postwork & Filter Forge reminds me of  http://www.darksim.com/ DarkTree is a lot of fun.

zbrush has a lot of killer shaders effects.Don't know how feasible it would be to use Zbrush thow.

http://www.topazlabs.com/ like a lot ,fast ,easy helps a lot.

Don't know if it works with gimp ,but it works with photoshop elements & http://www.irfanview.com/ :)

I am a fan of SeanE and the hand drawn comics styles
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/browse.php?user_id=23561

For a solo artist to hand draw comics like Diamond 005 ,006 takes to long ,a week a page is just not feasible but with renderosity and some killer fillters we might just get some kool comics :)

I've been doing illustrations like the one linked for a long time and (rarely) I also upload this stuff to my gallery here. Using Poser renders and postworked with Photoshop. Drawing tablet is essential.

If that kind of illustrative style suits your needs, I could give a short tour of my process (been pretty much the same for a few years now after I came up with it).

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Mon, 10 January 2011 at 7:07 PM

yeah, I agree with bevans84. after looking at OP's drawings, easy way to eliminate surface detail and get it flat like those is to use snowsultan's z-flattening.  poser render is gonna leave in too much realistic detail unless the model is z-flattened IMVHO.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Mon, 10 January 2011 at 8:28 PM

file_463907.jpg

I'm not big on the whole z-tooning. Poser does just fine using it's own toon settings. The image is just poser. I just don't see the point of complicating things when you don't need to.

But as I said before. It really depends on what look your going for. There is also the poser sketch that you can use as another layer.

here's a case where OP appears to want honest appraisals, which is refreshing IMVHO.  I liked the blue flame covering the hands. it would make a good tattoo with some simplification and clean-up. I didn't think it was a professional-looking toon because:

  • overall style is primitive, done in isolation from others (no professional training nor art school)
  • too symmetrical
  • edges rough, machine-generated
  • inner details blurred or tentative, afterthought, machine-generated
  • awkward poser4-style kneeling pose with knees off the ground but toes touching
  •  breast-lines and nipple positions like that are what we always see in primitive (unschooled) nude drawings of girls
  • it appears to be a female but it also seems to have a beard
  • no background, foreground (unless it's sposeta be a tattoo, in which case none needed)

If I delete everything before the http: it will work.

I'm trying to dig my drive out from last storm. 3 to 6 foot drifts. Does not leave much time or energy at the end of the day. It will still take at least another 6 days to get it done.

First image. really needs cleaning up. Style looks OK.

The second, not sure what your going for. You say you want to do toon/comics but I'm not seeing that in your work. The images are nice effects but untill you do a scene, I can't really comment on it. Though the skull might look better with the eyes black also. But that is a personal choice.

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Wed, 12 January 2011 at 7:06 PM
