Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 09 3:46 am)

Subject: Another dumb question.

I have been using Poser for years, since Poser 4.  I always just accepted that when you place an item in the scene, that it will load at the center of the universe, ie 0,0,0.

Which to me can be a PITA as some of my scenes are quite big, and getting the item to where it should be is troublesome at best.  Other programs I use enable me to load the object to where I release the button when dragging into the scene.  Although it normally has to be moved some, I don't have to search the entire scene to find it.  Is there any way to do this in Poser that I haven't found?

Nothing built into Poser, no.

Here's what I do. I press Ctrl-T to switch to top view. Now I zoom out.

When I drop in a new prop, it's in the world center. From top view I can easily grab it and drag it close to where I'm working. Then I switch cameras again.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

If you save with bidy trans the prop will load to wherever it was saved from. Some sets use this to load to predefined positions.

I tend to just type in x and z positions based on some nearby item. If you use the + move tool you can move the current selected item without risking selecting something else by mistake.

Thanks.  I keep forgetting the top camera.  And I should have thought of the tip to look at a close object.

Perhaps in a future version they will improve placement ability.  I would like to see double-clicking an item to load at center, and drag to drop in the approximate area of the drop.  Wishful thinking.

There was a script somewhere that would move an object to where another object was located in the scene. I am not at home, and I don't know if I still have that among my Python scripts. I remember that it worked, because it moved point lights to where I wanted them when matching them to candles. It would also be useful for those objects that load to some strange location and are hard to find. Maybe somebody remembers the name, and where it is?

Good question Jcleaver, but let me give a hint. Put something about the question in the title. More people will read and answer. :)

The script you're referring to is one of Ockham's and is one I used almost ALL the time. Do a search for Ockham and then follow it to his home page. While you're there, look at all the other cool stuff.

Thanks.  Found them, and it does work well.
