Subject: Scatter Node - Difference between Skin 1 and Skin 2?

Mark@poser ( ) posted Fri, 20 January 2012 at 10:53 PM · edited Tue, 28 January 2025 at 7:28 PM

Would anyone know the difference between skin 1 and skin 2 in the scatter node as material choices for PP2012? I did not see it explained in the manual. It seems most people are using skin 1.

Thanks

I don't know the tech differences- but one appears a little lighter than the other. To my eye-a subtle difference. BagginsBill might know. Many of us are using variations on SSS skin he posted on the RDNA forums in preference to the pre-set shaders. So I usually uncheck the box.

I'm doing test renders now.  In preview it looks like skin 2 looks like its slightly more fair skinned, color wise.  These are 2 balls with just scatter plugged into them.  Top is skin 2.

I turned color off in the mat for both of them to see if I could tell if they scatted differently.  Looks like some color made it in anyways.

I dunno if this is a bug or not, but it tells us what we need to know about the difference.  I set the thickness of the balls to 10% of normal and put the light behind it.  Skin 1, still on bottom definately has more yellow/tan in it than skin 2.

Okay, I just picked a random texture in my runtime and loaded 240.  The difference...  very discreet.  If I wasn't paying attention and comparing them I wouldn't have noticed it.

So for practical purposes once you get it into a more complete shader, not much of a difference between the two.

Apparently the paper on which the algorithm for the Scatter node is based included two different test readings for human skin.  As I understand it, the preset options available for that node reflect the substances for which the paper had provided readings.

I would assume that the Mean_Free_path and Index_of_Refraction settings have basically been varied, if the internals of Scatter are at all like the externals for Custom_Scatter.  No idea whether they're based on the same algorithm or not.

But BB could almost surely tell us.

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

Why do so many members of this forum continue to ignore my many-times-repeated posts telling you about the extensive SSS demonstrations at RDNA?

Shout it to the rooftops, people. I spent dozens of hours posting results there. You will learn a lot by going there.

SM wanted all the early demonstrations posted at RDNA, in the official PP2012 forum. This is not the official PP 2012 forum, yet you guys still come here first for information. I don't get it.

That doesn't mean I won't answer questions here, but when I posted already for hours over there, I don't want to keep having to come here and tell you "Go there". Pay attention. No I'm not cranky - I'm just really busy and I can't spend 20 minutes word-smithing.

Anyway, I demonstrated every single preset, with slabs of different thickness, showing front side and back side colors. It took me many many hours. When you want to see what the presets do, go to this thread.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

I recognize that my comments on skin 1 and skin 2 were rather limited, but the near lack of difference is obvious from doing a comparison using the SSS test setup.

By the way, I am willing to share that stack of boxes if anybody wants it. It's a special prop I made via Python where the boxes have very precise thickness.

The difference is only visible if "Use_material_color" is checked, isnt it ?

I have read thru a lot of the posts over at RDNA, but there are so many I couldn't recall this question being addressed. I just couldn't recall late last night. What I was really curious about was whether one was better for fair skin.

I do think Renderosity wants this forum used and active, so I felt I could post questions here. If you can't post PP2012 questions on Rendersosity, the forum coordinators need to tell us.

Thanks for the help.

I don't think it is a question that you cannot post 2012 questions at Rendorosity and it does seem to be a busier forum so maybe you are more likely to have your question answered here.

That said, the official forum for Poser 9 and 2012 was at RNDA and therefore there is a wealth of information there, particularly on the features that were new, of which Sub Surface Scattering was one. So much was written at the time, not only by BB but also the ambassadors, it would not be possible to repeat it all here and would be a waste of time.

I use one of BBs set-ups for the skin as soon as I purchased 2012 but I had read about it for weeks before while I waited for day when I could play with it for real.   I still read the RNDA forum but look here as well as they are both have so much information.

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

Forgot to add that while at RNDA I think the Poser 9/2012 gallery is worth a look too as it is nice to see what others are getting out of the new software.

I agree! I think more of the posters are using the features that distinguish the newer software from the older.
